I'd like to offer 2 versions of a lighting boom: One version would include a counterweight, and the other version would not.
The weight is relatively low-value but weighs 15 lb, which would add nearly 50% to the shipped weight. Given the weight's low value, I want both variations to be the same price, and let the buyer decide whether getting the weight is worth the additional shipping cost.
Basically:
- Boom w/ weight $300
- Boom w/o weight $300
I'd prefer calculated shipping since it could vary greatly, from 35 lb local to 50 lb distant.

Curiosity question. Why would you sell the two items for the same price?
You can't do multiple types of shipping on a variation listing or a separate shipping by different line items. You will need to make this two separate listings.

Customers HATE variation listings. Just make 2 separate listings. Problem solved.

While some don't like them many others do. Not everyone dislikes them.

There is just ZERO reason to make a variation listing here. 2 listings, lighting boom with weight and lighting boom without weight. They can even link to each other in the description.
This gives the original poster TWICE the search results and doesn't turn off any of the MANY people who have been burned by years of clicking on variation listings only to find what they wanted was gone or was way over market price.
Also, I doubt the proper category for that equipment even allows variations in the first place.

When used appropriately I (as a buyer) would "hate" to not have variation style listings.
The OP's use would definitely be appropriate.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, I get it, you don't like variation listings. I take no issue with that. Others don't mind them, some do. Same with most anything. Some like auctions, some don't.
FYI, you may want to revisit my post to the OP, I told they that they CAN'T do a variation listing in the way that they want.

Except that they can't have different shipping rates. Unless that is an enhancement that has been added since the last time I set one up, which was a few months ago, anything can happen around here. 😀

There is an easy solution to that, simply charge extra for the variation which is heavier.
Check the shipping difference between variations to zone 8 (or zone 5, 6, 7) take the difference and add that to the price of the heavier variation.

The lighting boom is just a one-off personal item that I'm getting rid of. Since the counterweight is low value, and which I have no use for, I'd rather incentivize the sale by including the counterweight as a "freebie" (charging only shipping) -- don't want to put-off a buyer by charging for a cheap accessory on top of already sky-high shipping.
Separate listings -- what I suspected, thanks.

What if a buyer buys both of them?

I understand that, however that isn't what the OP asked. But still it would be a way to fix that issue if the OP wanted to do that. Or they could do Free Shipping and just add in shipping as you suggested into the price of the product. Personally I think they should just be separate listings so they can use Calculated Shipping.

Is it possible for each variation to have its own calculated shipping?
Answer: No.

IMO, If your "variations" listing has so much a variation that the shipping is different from one variation to the next, it should NOT be a variations listings.

You have 250 Free Listings since you do not have a Store.
You currently are using five.
Why bother with variations?
Just list each one separately.
Variations are useful when, for example, the seller has a dress available in ten sizes and four colours.
KISS.
