Lately I've got quite a few cases open by buyers when they are just asking simple questions like "when was this shipped". I'm wondering if ebay is streamlining them into opening cases again instead of contacting me directly because a lot of these new cases are very frivolous.

I haven't heard of it yet.

I certainly hope they are not doing that again! I remember when ebay pulled that stuff before. It was touted as one of those "You asked, we listened" things in response to sellers asking that a buyer contact them prior to opening a claim or case. Then, as a result, the ask question feature by the buyer automatically opened some sort of case, even if they were simply asking a question or saying 'thank you'. I believe various 'dings' were awarded as well.
I suppose we should look at the "choices" offered to a buyer post sale to see if something unusual is in a dropdown.

Of course e-bay is encouraging these practices. It generates more income for them.
