Is Worthpoint.com well.....WORTH IT?

So I hit a GREAT estate sale Saturday and Sunday, and a lot of the various treasures I've found surprisingly haven't been on eBay in the past 60 days, or however long they reach back to show sold items....However, a google search for the item ALWAYS brings up a Worthpoint.com listing, which of course, I cannot view, because I cannot fathom spending 29.99 for a subscription to a "subjective" values website....I'm curious if anyone here has bit the bullet and subscribed to W.P., and if you have, has it been worth it?

I have never used it as I use other sources  for value as well as eBay sold item lists.

If you say non are showing on eBay than it might be worth the money to see what such items sold for if other sources can not tell you the value of the item.

Waste of good money.  You can search ebay and their ended listings and get the same info. Auction and flea-market prices vary as the crow flies anyway.  So past prices may not be what it will sell for now. Could be higher or lower.

Why use Worthpoint when you can go into your SELLER HUB, click on the RESEARCH tab and use the Terapeak

Product Research for FREE which goes back 365 days.  Lots of information there.

Ebay sold listings only go back 90 days.

@vintageantique77

I use Worthpoint and I think it's worth the money.  Especially for items that only come up once or twice a year.  Terapeak was cheaper and better until eBay bought it.  Now it's worthless as far I'm concerned.  Has the same searching issues as the main site.

Worth the money if you need to research older than Terapeak. If you don't need the extras (library and marks), just get the basic. I found a cute doxie figurine that showed it had sold last on ebay for $5 auction. Searched Worthpoint and found the last one sold in 2003 and company was out of business a few years later. Sold as BIN for $42 within a few weeks. When something seems rare, and desirable to a collector, the more good references you have available can be well worth the extra cost. If you can afford it, I think it's worth it.

Take the costs of your item, including overheads like fees, packaging,  and gas.

Add your profit margin.

Use that price as a starting bid for an Auction.

You can spend a lot of time researching, while you could be turning stuff into money.

If there is a pent-up demand for the item you will do well at auction. If there is only one guy interested, you will still make a profit.

Hehehe. You can take a gander at my most recent auctions and see! Really  a goldmine was to be seen here in Durham, NC this weekend. An original estate from the mid 1930's was up for combing, and it did not disappoint! A shame there was such a crowd, and was only 2 days!

From my immediate locating of the research button, I see that Terapeak is 12$/month. Not exactly free.

Re: Is Worthpoint.com well.....WORTH IT?

I mean....Values are subjective right? I was relieved to find that this recent estate wasn't full of "eBay Retail" prices. They always say something is worth what someone will pay for it. I know I always get irritated when something valuable gets sold by someone who had no clue what they had....Ruins the market for a few weeks for those of us that are selling items that may attract new, uneducated bidders - such as telephones in my case. They see your same $200 Western Electric telephone sold a week ago for 5$ listed by a 3 feedback account, and suddenly THAT is the value in their minds....Such a irritating subject, the one of determining "value". Sellers like myself like to get cute now and then and list a whale of an item for low starting prices to attract a bidding war. I think bidding wars are somewhat of a rare happening - as I've never seen one on my items...Maybe the item in question wasn't really as rare as I thought, though...

In addition to eBay sold listings, I use liveauctioneers - similar to worthpoint but free to join to view auction sales results. Also a great tool to find live / online auctions around the world. It's been a phenomenal tool for me to source unique items to list on eBay

Re: Is Worthpoint.com well.....WORTH IT?

Absolutely agree with your last post. We had a local Charity thrift shop in a nearby town that I would visit on occasion. Some volunteer there thought it would be a great idea to run off EBay posted fixed prices and slap them all over collectables. I told the manager it was tacky and she couldn't really ask those prices as they had not sold ( they ran the highest price on ebay) Well they finally stopped doing that! Anyway, peeked at your goodies, those phones are terrific! Got my eye on one item that I may have to buy. Love shopping in N.C. esp Asheville and Hendersonville!

Re: Is Worthpoint.com well.....WORTH IT?

Ha! There is a local thrift called TROSA here in Durham  - actually does this very thing. They are in place to help drug addicted people get clean, and when the thrift store first opened - my oh my - you found some killer items! Now they have all gotten wise and slap eBay prices on everything they can find..The GCF puts their prime merch. on eBay, and so does the Ernie Mills Rescue Mission thrift store! .Another one bites the dust. There was a small tub of baseball cards in Trosa today, I figured they would be 1.99 - they were 39.99....Get out of town.

I am so curious to as which item you have your eyes on! You don't have to tell if you don't want to!

I had NEVER heard of that website before! I was registered and checking prices in about a minute! Thank you so much!
