To be honest, many Ebay sellers cannot make any significant amount of money with the strategies which many sellers used in the past.
Many Ebay sellers cannot meet today's customer service/protection standards.
And many cannot get the fast money they did in the past.
It is time for some Ebay sellers to go.
I left Ebay in 2008, when it became evident that there were better ways to sell.
I returned to Ebay when it was clear to me that Ebay was the best place to sell what I sell.
Like all the other Internet marketplaces, that are surviving, Ebay has more sellers and items listed than it needs. When that happens all of the sellers cannot meet their goals, the competition is too great and many of them lack the profit margins and revenues to stay.
The attrition is normal. And it is not the result of lack of concern for sellers.
If I sold only what I did 20 years ago, I could not find a site to sell successfully on because much of what I sold then has no buyers today.
Spot on along with the retail and varied competitors being fierce no less there seems to be two vicious loops emerging more and more. Bad sellers w/ counterfeits on and on resulting in consumers being more and more driven away from Marketplace based sellers and same time bad buyers taking advantage of not only holes in systems but the actual card based protections mechanisms in big fashion.
Atop all this more folks scrambling to find more sources of income and the first things they find are on YouTube w/ sellers monetizing on their whims. Those more desperate go selling pricey things only to be had and we see some in here pretty regular basis and to be sure there's more had than appear in forum. Those folks have voices and friends, family which can't bode well for buyer retention.
Perhaps eBay should consider a more cautious approach to new sellers such as start small and slow and if said sellers have bigger ticket items get eBay involved in brokering the sales or perhaps even offers some forms of services to that end. So if I care sell my pricey phone lets say or new user care sell a engagement ring worth considerable eBay can offer a direct brokerage make some money at it and better protect people. Perhaps even bring the "Value scammer" to justice as the company voice is surely much more powerful towards authorities than any individuals.
Be an interesting general question to the seasoned seller community on site... Would sellers be willing to pay a bit higher commissions towards helping foster a safer environment not that I'm sure what that look like.
eIS for example goes a long way into protecting sellers and presumably a large part of that is eBay standing between the sales so perhaps parcel inspections take place. What might something like that look like on a more domestic terrain?
