Is There Something in the Water Cooler?

An awful lot of people seem to be leaving eBay today.  Has anyone else noticed this?

And it's probably not selling.

He is probably asking twice what everyone else is, and then shipping from Canada is added.

There is an very interesting posting by marketsplash with 130 assorted statistics about eBay. About 2/3 of the way down the page there is a bar chart that shows the number of buyers increased from 2010 to 2018 but has been declining steadily since. Unfortunately, there is not a similar chart for the number of sellers.

The interesting thing about long and detailed articles is that there is enough information and statistics that 2 people with diametrically opposed views can find enough information to defend their point of view so that both can claim loudly SEE I WAS RIGHT !

https://marketsplash.com/ebay-statistics/

@richard1rst  one big problem with sites like this is often they may be taking their information from other sites which may or may not be accurate rather than directly from eBay's public financial statements and SEC filings and/or they may just be full of outdated information.

Just at a quick glance I can tell you that site is 100% incorrect on the Active Buyer, Active Seller, and GMV stats they have posted.

They don't appear to have taken into account that eBay changed the definition of GMV in 2021, which also changed the definition of Active Buyers and Active Sellers, and that eBay restated these figures going back to 2018 due to that change.

I would like to see a sign put up there at the water cooler pointing to the departure gate with additional guidance stating that with that departure ..............   no announcement of such is needed. Leave quietly and close the door behind you.

Or maybe just an attempt to garner more views on their page/store...just my opinion.

One thing that has changed, I think, is how people handle anger.

I was taught, as were many in my generation, that when I feel angry I should stop, take hold of myself, calm down -- because speaking or acting in anger nearly always yields regrettable results.

Now, it seems to me, people feel that if they are angry the whole world should know about it, and know about it while the anger is still hot.  And it doesn't seem to matter, really, what caused the anger, or whose fault it is.  It is the ANGER itself that is burnished and put on public display.

But, then, I am old and perhaps my view is skewed.  I did learn, long ago, and have said before, that many people find more emotional gratification in having problems than in solving them.

Agree 100%.  But unfortunately for every 1 person who comes to air their anger over a problem, there is usually a whole crowd happy to come amplify their anger, by either pointing out (without compassion) how the problem was their own fault, or to agree that they were wronged and it's just more proof that eBay (or eBay's buyers, or eBay's sellers) are evil villains.  There are Community members who have left eBay but remain in the eBay Community just to watch their decision get reaffirmed.  Or at least they say they left, but either way, if leaving was such a wise choice, wouldn't they be spending their time being happier doing something else?

On the other hand, I have made a few (and seen a few posted by others) positive posts, like sharing the results of trying some new platform feature for instance, and the response tends to be very limited, with some of those responders being skeptics.

Re: Is There Something in the Water Cooler?

you can call it attrition, every week almost one thousand USA ebay sellers are going to die,its just a numbers game

one out of every 60 folks in the USA is an ebay seller and you have roughly 50,000 folks die in the USA every week

If I don't get more sales today, I'll be one of them!

Re: Is There Something in the Water Cooler?

Well, there are over a half million people without power on the east coast....the lights have been turned off to a lot of people.

And me on the west coast...we finally get a break in the rain and first thing I do is go out shopping before the rain comes again tonight.

I can't even imagine packages getting to their destinations on time.

I think it all about the weather making people grumpy lately.

Re: Is There Something in the Water Cooler?

95 percent of veteran sellers who post "I quit" posts don't quit. Or they come back quickly.

I did an entire youtube video about people quitting ebay a few months back, examined a whole bunch of posts of people quitting ebay after 20 years. Of all the threads I read going back years I only found a couple of quitters who didn't still have active items today.
