Hi, I have a buyer who paid my invoice promptly, but then requested a shipping upgrade that's going to cost significantly more. The buyer is prepared to pay the difference, which in the past I'd simply have invoiced via PayPal. But I'm unsure how to do this with ebay's managed payment system? I don't want to risk exchanging email addresses (to facilitate a PayPal transaction) via ebay's messaging system, as I don't want ebay to flag my account for off-site transactions. Can anyone help?

Ok, if they ask to upgrade the shipping, you can send them an invoice through Pay Pal or they can send the funds to your Pay Pal.
Since there's been a recent transaction, you should be able to ask for their email address or give them yours.

Just a total guess here, but I think you would be okay to ask for an email address, since the transaction that was intended to take place on ebay has already taken place, payment has been made, and ebay got their hands on every penny they were allowed to. But I could be wrong. At the very least, there should have been a phone number that came along with the order, I see no reason why you couldn't call and ask for the info.
From the way I see it, there was a gap created that ebay doesn't have a solution to, when they took paypal out of the equation. Just my 2 cents worth. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable posters that might be able to give you more insight.

What I do is create a new Ebay listing titled something like "Shipping Upgrade for Previous Order" with a few details in the description. When your customer pays for it add the same tracking number to both items.

I would ship according to what was listed on the listing and what the buyer paid accompanied by a polite message explaining so. If buyer wants to cancel, so be it.
None of this upgrade nonsense after the fact.

Changing the situation after the fact of purchase: refund them cancel the sale and put them on the blocked bidders list.
Just plain asking for trouble to go though with this.

You can't ask the buyer to pay any more then what was shown in the listing.
If you made a mistake on the shipping, you have to make up the difference.

Ask for the PP address in eBay Messages. You are in a transaction, so no blowback.
Then bill through PP.
Get paid, ship.

Why would you do this? You still have to pay commission to eBay.

Yeah, no, you're asking for trouble.
eBay is not the upgrade to first class at the counter type of operation. Leave those shenanigans to the airlines.

OK, well, I was uneasy about posting my email address in a message on ebay's messaging system, but the buyer just went ahead and volunteered his email address on his own initiative, so if ebay has a problem with it, it'll be on his end. I managed to invoice him via paypal and get the extra funds, so all's well that ends well. I still think this is a flaw in ebay's payment system that needs to be addressed.

I round it up to cover that. It's not rocket science.

It's amazing some of the responses this post received...some from people who did not comprehend the post...Some that would not lift a finger to help a customer out.

It's because this type of stuff should be worked out BEFORE the auction ends. The buyer should have contacted the seller prior to the sale so the seller had the opportunity to revise the listing to accommodate the shipping request.
As a seller, I'd have no problem doing this.
After the sale? No way. Too many logistical problems/issues if the buyer has an issue with the item.
