I want to list an item as auction, but am hesitant to do so because I was told by eBay that after the customer purchases the item, I will be able to charge the cost of freight to the customer via the "send invoice" option from the action drop down menu after the customer has made the purchase. I am looking at past items I have sold (that are still either in transit or have been paid for, but not shipped yet) and none of the action drop downs show an option to "send invoice." Any body have any advice in regards to this?

What is the item number you are asking about.
The send invoice function goes away once an Item has been paid for.
The "send money" function is a PayPal thing not eBay and you could use it if you actually sold something that was going to be shipped via "freight" (ie: LTL Truck Shipment).
I had a brief skim of your recent sales and all had a specified shipping charge or free shipping so I don't see anything that qualifies for "freight" shipping.

If it's listed for Local Pickup Only, then the buyer can arrange whatever pickup and shipping he wants. If you're actually including freight shipment as part of the sale, you're taking on the responsibility of having it arrive safely at the other end, or paying for refund or return if Something Bad happens instead. If it's big enough or heavy enough to require Freight shipping, this might be something better sold locally.

You mean "request money" or "send an invoice" in paypal. I don't think the seller wants to send money to the buyer to ship their item ..............

You are correct! (on all counts I expect).
Maybe you can come back and provide a few more details.

Okay, thank you. So do most sellers just offer free shipping for freight shipments?

Still no details....what exactly do you mean by "freight"?

Heck no. Freight is expensive. Most listings I see that require free shipping say to contact the seller for a quote.

No.. Selling something that you have to arrange freight instead of the usual USPS, FedEx, UPS is not a good fit for eBay sales. Local pickup is a better option.

No. We need to keep the terminology straight here: if you show Free Shipping in your listing, that means that you are eating the shipping expenses to deliver the item to the buyer via whatever method you're showing in the Shipping details, and you're responsible for delivering it safely in all respects. A damaged shipment means you're on the hook for a refund, either with or without paying to have it shipped back to you first.
If you list it as Local Pickup Only, with no Shipping method of any kind offered, that means that it's up to the buyer to collect it, either in person or by sending his own shipping service to collect it from you. If something bad happens to it that way, after it's been collected from you, that's not your responsibility.
