Just curious as to the impact a sale cancelled for out of stock has on a seller's metrics. And how long does stay on the record.
This morning I had to cancel a sale for that very reason. It was first time I'd encountered this situation. They item they purchased had sold last month. Truly, I have no clue how it was listed a second time. So obviously I had to cancel the sale today for the reason out of stock.
I know I will get a defect and I am not complaining. Stuff happens. I was just wondering about the damage to my metrics and for how long the defect will stay on my record.
Thank you for any information.

3 months. You can see the dates of the period it's in your metrics on your metrics dashboard. https://sellerstandards.ebay.com/dashboard?region=US
It happens, thankfully rarely. I have one of the sitting in my metrics right now too. Mine was in May, so next month eval it will be cleared for me.

Thanks so much! Not too horrible then. I appreciate the quick response. Now to determine how in the world something that sold got listed. That is perplexing.
Have a great day and Happy Selling to everyone.

It's a percentage, so it affects you more if you are a smaller seller. We've cancelled plenty of transactions as OOS (not a huge number by any means, though more than I'd like) without ever going below our percentage required to keep Top Rated status (we did that once, though, years ago), but for a smaller seller it could make more of a difference.

Thank you. Good to know.

Nominally 12 months and usually 13. Definitely not 3.
If your sales volume drops seasonally the effect is magnified.
You can have no new defects for months and all of a sudden have issues due to a sales drop.

@rosszonebricks and @ageless_fashion
Three months is for a larger seller.
It is 12 months for a small seller.

It is 3 months if you exceed a certain volume of sales. From @penguins_dont_fly 's link:
To make sure we're getting a fair picture, we'll adjust how far we look back (the "evaluation period") depending on how much you've sold recently:

Most answers seem to concentrate on how long they hang on. More important is that 1 Out Of Stock defect will have zero effect on your seller status.
