I have a ethical question...

The other day Pizza Hut Hawaii released their "Lanyard Lei". They do this ever few years. The lanyard, ID holder and a card good for a personal pan pizza is $5. I bought several of them. I use the card for myself and sell the lanyard online for $7 plus $5 S&H.  I had my first sale today. The customer is local.  They can get it here for $5 instead of $12. I even checked with the buyers hometown Pizza Hut location, they still have them available for sale.

I was going to message the buyer and thank them for the purchase but let him know he can get it locally and ask if he wants me to cancel the sale. Am i crazy? Would you do the same?

I have a ethical question...

I have faced decisions like this in my long selling career both on eBay and prior to here. I always ask myself "Can I sleep at night with the decision I have made."  Others will probably disagree but I have to live with my conscience so that determines my course of action.

To follow up on my own reply, I probably would tell the customer.

Hm that depends. You’re not crazy with that idea if you can also turn it into a way to market your store to the buyer, especially if the buyer is a big eBay buyer. I’m sure you know many buyers value kind gestures like this and might come back to buy more, some don’t care about it all.

One thing to note, we don’t know why the buyer isn’t getting it from their own Pizza Hut. There could be a number of reasons. Maybe they are home bound for the moment, maybe they are deathly allergic to pizza.

There’s a few things I buy from Home Depot that sell at a good profit. You can even get them from their website to deliver to you, and I’ll bet that’s much closer to my buyers than your buyer and their local Pizza Hut. Call me the devil I guess.

PS. “An ethical” 😉

OK Are you being serious @inhawaii  ?  You never know with you 😉  Here's my serious answer.  I would fulfill the sale & the only thing I would say to the buyer is "thank you for your purchase".  People have many reasons they buy, not only price.  Convenience, personal situation, agoraphobia, don't drive, in a wheelchair, a million of them.

I don't question why people want to pay more than retail, I assume they have their reasons.

ETA:  I don't consider it even slightly unethical.  It's the buyer's responsibility to determine how much they want to pay & do their due diligence when shopping.  I will reiterate, not everyone shops based on price.

Personally, I would just add a second lanyard for free or include the card.

an answer to your question.... Am I crazy?

No, maybe conflicted?

Would you do the same?

I don't know, what are you going to do?

Complete the transaction as started.

I have a ethical question...

I heard back from the buyer.

He wants to go through with the order.

Apparently they are sold out of the color he wants.

He was very appreciative that I contacted him.

I'm glad I did too.

Please don’t say you ordered pineapple on your pizza. 🤮

IMHO you are just fine.  It is not part of the seller's job to make sure the buyer knows what is going on around them.  Besides you don't know the specifics on this buyer.  They could be homebound for many different reasons.  They may have no use for the $5 pizza card and are only wanting the lanyard.

I don't see an ethical question really.  You did your job, the buyer has to do theirs.

No! No pineapple on my pizza!

Some places call that a "Hawaiian" pizza.

Nobody I know here likes pineapple on their pizza.

While we call it Chinese food, the Chinese just call it food.  😛  It's not the same in Hawaii?  Hawaiian pizza is just pizza?  LOL  LOVE Hawaiian pizza.  Pineapple & ham.  The other day, I had Hawaiian pizza with stuffed crust & they put butter & garlic on it.   Delicious!

Too funny.  Loved pizza all my life (who doesn't) & on my first business trip to HI, at some small restaurant, I had pizza with pineapple & zucchini.  First time I ever had either one on a pizza & I LOVED IT!  Funny, that my first pizza with pineapple was actually in HI.   Also, the first time I was turned on to purple potatoes at some dive vegan stand that was AMAZING!  I still have dreams about several of the hole-in-the-wall places I ate at,  in Hawaii.

I'm glad you did what felt right to you.  You have to be able to live with yourself.  I still wouldn't have done it, but that's not the point.

Like how the French call them “our fries” instead of French fries? Lol
