I hate hate hate that...surely tomorrow will be better

I don't accept offers, but still get them every now and then via messages.
Had a headlight listed for $15, free shipping. Item description inside lower 48 only.
Had Priority chosen because there was no Ground Advantage when item was listed.
NEVER had anybody call me out on this...Until Today.

Get a message offering $10
I see buyer is in AK.
I say Sorry, Can't do that.
So, he buys it for $15
Rather than start an argument, I go ahead and package, make label, go with Ground Advantage since it's Alaska.
I really don't want this deal to cost me more than $15, and I'd sure like to accommodate the buyer. Even if the listing says I won't.
Sort of feel like I'm doing what I can to make it happen.
Get a message back from the buyer:
Calling me out on the Ground Advantage instead of Priority.

It was all I could do to keep "business composure" while attempting to explain why.
Then, I said to heck with it and cancelled the deal.

I really hate it when a customer gets under my skin that way.
Double whammy, 1st the insult offer and then whining about the shipping.
Looking forward to responding to an upcoming negative. LOL...Ugh

Sellers can upgrade shipping but are not to use a lesser service.

The buyer paid for Priority shipping and thats the shipping you should have supplied.

You must not have your account set to not ship to Alaska or the buyer would not have been able to purchase.

Just putting stuff in the description is not good enough.

Hopefully this buyer will cut you some slack but if you get a negative, you deserve it.

It would be best if you didn't blame anyone else, but yourself. Most sellers would have sent the item Priority and taken the loss. Since it was your mistake, you should be getting negative feedback which is unfortunate.

Sorry.

Just curious...

I can understand something big and/or heavy, but why wouldn't you ship a headlight to AK or HI?

Not really blaming anybody.  Just hate that I felt the need to cancel the transaction.

I get it and hate it when things happen that I could have prevented. Don't let it get you down.

Why don’t you have exclusions set up to block Hawaii and Alaska if you don’t want to ship there?

Wasn't an option when listed.
I've always figured out a way to make it happen when a buyer overlooked it.
I can revise my listings.  Then again, I can do that every few months when eBay changes something.  Which is a non-stop thing.   I'd rather spend my time selling than revising.  (my bad, but we all do things differently).
I'm just upset with myself for letting somebody get to me like that over $15. LOL

@redlinear

To protect yourself from these headaches in the future, go into your settings and exclude AK and HI.

Remember -- buyers don't always read descriptions.

I'll ship you an engine, without ever bothering You, or worrying You about it, IF I can figure out a way to get it done and still make money.

SHIPPING: Inside Cont US: Free
AK, HI, PR: Free if feasibly possible (some items are just too large)
International: Free through eBay's International Shipping Program (EIS)

I can't tell you how many times I've lost money on a low dollar item because the PL rate and the USPS raising rates before I could adjust my price.

It's always a low dollar, high competition item.  Gotta love when an item like an electrical component for an automobile made in the 1960s isn't worth more than $9 because they made millions of them and the market is flooded.  An item that would cost over $90 to make in 2024 if you had to (Especially American Made).  But that's the world we live in.

I always consider those losses a write off and I'm happy to be rid of the low value item.

This is why it really bothers me when I see sellers selling things off in lots of 10 or 20 when they have hundreds of them.  They flood the market and destroy any value.  Better to sell the whole lot at once or one at a time.  I always buy big and dish out slowly one at a time over decades.

Will you get a 'ding' for a cancel sale? Just curious.

It's not so much the money.  On THIS particular item (headlight).  If somebody in AK would have just bought it for $15.  AND, shipping Ground Advantage would have been $16?   I'd have just shipped it.
Reason: It's not worth arguing or fighting about.
But, the offer almost started the fight.
$15 was BY far the cheapest on eBay.   And he was whining about the price wanting it for $10.
I mean, come on.  There's cheap and then there's ANNOYING CHEAP.  (garage / yard sale buyers that'll hound you over 25 cents wanting it for a dime.
THEN, to come back with the shipping thing even though I am shipping it somewhere I said I wouldn't...
It's just one of those buyers that's trouble for me (maybe not to most sellers) but to ME, yeah...
It was just time to punt.
I mixed up some stuff last week. Cost me $40 to fix it and I didn't have to.  But, understanding buyers made it pleasant and worth while.

@redlinear

The best thing you can learn from this mistake is how to avoid it next time.

I wish you good luck 🤞
