I had a nice sale today for over $100 (for me that's a nice sale).
But it was one of those "can you ship to to this address instead" orders.
I ended up cancelling the order and asked the buyer to update her address and re-purchase.
About 50% of the time they never go through with the re-purchase.
I was just wondering, is everyone here firm on that rule or does anyone break that rule knowing it will void your protection in a INR case?
This was not a repeat customer.

I always stick with eBay policy regarding shipping addresses. Having seller protection in an INR case is the only protection we have as sellers besides feedback removal.
I’ve had a few buyers request to cancel their order because they entered “a wrong address” and never come back and buy.
ETA you did the right thing by canceling.

No, I think you did right...I never ship anything unless it's the address on the label, you probably saved yourself from a possible INR and loss of your money.

I think you were correct in how you handled this. I have a tendency to write on here, 'always keep your selling account in mind when making choices'. If it sold once, it will sell again and perhaps they will come back. Best of luck to you....

I am definitely firm on that rule from new customers!
With a repeat buyer, ones that I have know over the years, I have shipped to a different address, usually snowbirds.
Can't be too careful anymore.

I get people asking to do this all the time. What does it matter, just edit the address on the sale page. The address does not matter, the scan of the label does, so as long as the package gets to the address they provide, you are fine, who cares if it's the address that they provide ebay or not. as long as the label gets scanned as delivered, thats all that matters.

I have gone ahead a few times for low dollar items without any problems, but I would do as you did for your sale. That amount isn't low dollar to me, so I would ask them to re-purchase.

Have I shipped to the alternate address? Yes, occassionally. But it depends on the price of the item and what I perceive as the risk.
I have also pleased with ebay countless times to provide a simple, streamlined way for buyers to make this request and for seller to accept (if we so choose) while still providing INR protection. It is certainly a known "pain point" for both sellers and buyers, but obviously it is not an ebay priority

NEVER EVER WOULD I change a shipping address unless the buyer agrees to repurchase with the correct address. I do not even do this for a repeat customer. People should know better on here that you cannot ship to a non registered address.

Nope—if said customer is a scammer they can fully get refunded and keep the loot if they file a complaint.

That is sad - I guess you will find out if it was a real buyer or not - Something just as sad is the thought of how many brand new sellers would just simply ship it to the requested address not knowing they may be putting themselves in harms way - I've said it before and I'll say it again, ebay needs to have a 15 minute training course for people who want to sell here, letting them know of problems and scams that might arise - That might actually put a dent in the thieves ability to find easy prey and in turn reduce the amount of fraud that occurs here... OK, I'm done - Good luck with round 2 of this sale!

Everything I do is based on how I feel at the time.
For minor items, I might ship to a different address (provided I'm sure it's the original buyer contacting me). In some cases these minor items don't really have tracking or significant tracking (such as an item shipped in Canada in an envelope).
It depends on how I feel, and whether or not I want to take the risk.

I have broke the rule a time or 2 over a year or 6, but not after careful vetting. Not burned, yet.

You say all that matters is the label is scanned as delivered. That is not true. It matters that the address is the one provided by eBay. It is true that a not received case will automatically close if tracking shows delivered but the buyer can contact eBay and show them the address was not the address on record and eBay will refund from your funds.

You did the right thing. I always go by the buyer's address given to eBay and that shows up on the shipping label. If the buyer tells me they are moving, I will point them to updating their address. I don't ship until eBay sends me notification with the registered address. I always use eBay's shipping labels, so I am confident that the address is the correct one.
