I got an offer, and before I responded eBay said it had sold and I received payment!?

On Oct. 24 at 4:18 PM I got an offer on an item. Two minutes later I got message from eBay it had sold and I had received payment. I hadn't responded. I didn't want to get a negative from eBay, so I didn't try to contact them. I asked the buyer if they had received a message accepting their offer and they didn't respond. I also sent the item on time. I wonder how that happened.  Has it happened to anyone else?

Did you set best offer on the item to accept above a certain price?  If so, it automatically accepted the offer......

Sounds like someone bought it while the person who made the offer was "still thinking about it" or something of the sort.   

Basically, the first person to PAY gets the goods.

If someone makes a purchase when there are "open" offers, the item will sell. Even if from the ID making an offer.

Was the purchase from the same ID as the offer?

Did it sell for the "offer" amount, or the listed amount?

Only one of those members will be able to pay -- the one who acted first, by either using the "Buy it now" option, or getting an accepted offer.

It is possible that a potential buyer made an offer and before you could accept, decline or make a counter-offer to that person a different buyer came along and paid full asking price for your item. In that case the buyer who made the offer would lose out because someone else was willing to pay your full asking price while the potential buyer was trying to get it at a lower price.

Did you check to see if the user names of the actual buyer and the potential buyer are different?

Also, sometimes a potential buyer will make an offer and then decide to buy the item at the asking price because they don't want take the chance that someone else might come along and buy it for the asking price.

Was the Sold/payment the same member who had sent the offer? Then either you had set up automatic acceptance, or he decided to pay full price and used the BIN button even though there was a pending offer from him.

If the item was sold to a different member, then you do not owe any apology to the buyer who sent the offer.  An offer is not "dibs;" while offer(s) or counteroffer(s) are pending, the listing is still active and any member can choose to use the "Buy it now" option.  Even a person who has sent an active offer.

OP, what's the problem.  Ship the item.  So what if the person who made an offer lost out?  Someone else took the BUY IT NOW option and won.
