I don't understand how to get my item on the first page

I have some Wizard of Oz Salt and Pepper Shakers listed. I checked to see what page they are on. I found they were  #78 under that listing. I changed my promotion from 5.1% to 8%. I rechecked the listings a few hours later and found I was now #86! I changed the price from $12.50 to $12.45 (I read here that changing the price even a little bit will  help).  After another couple hours I was #84. 

How do I move my item closer to the first page? What else can I do?

I see those S&P at about 17 or 18 on first page........... There are only 107 items in that search, so only see 1 page....... That one is the sponsored listing.  The regular listing is about 37 up from the bottom.

Listings move around day from to day........so while you may hit the first page one day, you may be much lower on the search the next.........or higher.
