It's pretty much never a good idea to escalate an INAD return to a case as a seller.
However I wanted to see what would happen by being totally honest.
When the buyer sends an item back you are given 2 days to inspect.
So I did that just that inspected. On the return there is a 'Report a problem'. The seller is given 2 options 1 for when they send the same item back but it's false INAD or they damaged/used item. Second one 'sent wrong item back'.
So im dealing with a scammer who sent me a card size poly envelope back instead of the raised queen size air mattress that I sent them.
So I report correctly 'sent wrong item back'.
This brings you to a screen that eBay advises a case should be created for this specific situation with no other options to give a deducted refund.
Unlike the first option that would bring you to the deduction screen.
I think this is a bad recommendation and is actually suggesting the seller do something against their interest as INAD have high chance to be sided in buyer favor.
Luckily it did pay off for me, but it was super risky.
I think this system design gets more inexperienced sellers in a position to get an unresolved case defect.

Here is a screen shot from the only option eBay gave me.
No deduction option to report they sent back something different.

I guess all they sent back was an envelope. I thought there might have been something inside the envelope. Guess not. Just an empty envelope.
Actually there could be something in there. Stickers, or a note. Something thin.
I haven't opened it yet. Grrr... I wasn't actually going to. Leave it sealed.
Since the case is closed I guess I could open it.

WoW! Talked about eBay playing fast and lose ,on dealing with Fraud Snad case's filed by scam buyers . This Just's Add's to their poor handling of Buyer return abuse.

I'd be curious if it has something to do with the size and volume of your ebay selling account. I have spoken to several customer service reps that have told me that they haven't issued any courtesy refunds for my account in a very long time, and that would be an option they could use to deal with a faulty return.
I suspect ebay builds in a courtesy refund ratio based on how large an account is. As this is the only way to satisfy the money back guarantee without penalizing good sellers for the actions of bad buyers.
The only hope is that ebay actually tracks these bad buyers over the long run.

You know I didn't really think about that.
But that could really be a thing.
I doubt eBay would actually admit it, as it might open up to abuse.
But that gets me thinking maybe the courtesy isn't a 1 time or static for volume.
Problem is you'd never know where you are with that ratio so you'd be gambling.

So I opened the poly mailer and this is what was inside.
They used my $20 label to send me this amazing card.
BTW you know who does this ? Dropshippers who need tracking protection on eBay. Probably AMZ dropshipper. They send out the card to fulfill eBay tracking requirement then have Amazon deliver actual item.

The package's weight would be significantly off from the two. It would seem that this would be a no-brainer and an easy way to spot scams like this.
Ai has no common sense though. And it seems Ai is running the show now. (seems....)

Always handled eBay business about the same as in house business and never gave it a 2nd thought.
If I thought I should refund, I did.
If I thought I should cancel, I did.
If something didn't leave here within 24hrs...no big deal, it'll ship tomorrow.
Are defects "really" that big of a deal to pay attention to? I mean, does it make some sort of difference every time you get one?
Top Rated and as far as I know, always have been
Sorry, just never really paid any attention to itFor small sellers a defect can cause real problems - we get very few a year before we can get smacked for a variety of reasons.
I suspect this was a courtesy refund - eBay does them periodically for seemingly random reasons, though I suppose there may be some method in the randomness.
I've only complained a few times about the returned item not being what I initially shipped.
Only the higher dollar items.
eBay has refunded them, and let me keep the funds (basically sided with both of us I guess?)
BUT, I've sure let some cheap items slide, and just refunded myself.

So, your 'buyer' sells a queen size air mattress to 'buyer2'.
Purchases the air mattress from you.
You send to 'buyer2' and 'buyer' then claims NAD and gets their money back from you (eBay) and also gets money from 'buyer2'.
WHAT a smart / SCAM business practice (but also very profitable).
