How would you describe these? What are they?

I bought these little things 40 years ago and added the thread to hang them on the Christmas tree. They do not stand up on their own. I have no idea what to call them to have any hope someone might stumble across them. Best thing I come up with is Miniature Asian Knit Dolls. They are 1.5" tall.

Are the faces hand painted?

Maybe Vintage Hand Painted Miniature Anime style Asian doll ornaments?

(I know, that is a mouthful right there!)

Hi, those are vintage crocheted ornament dolls. Try googling that for more descriptive terminology, but they are crocheted as opposed to knitted. Good luck with them!

Hopefully others will be along soon to weigh in on this.

I left out the word knit, and miniature should be next to the word doll so they know the dolls are miniature.

That's great, thanks so much! I kept seeing crochet faces too but then checked google images and found dolls just like the ones I have with painted fabric faces.

Can someone tell me the difference between knitted and crocheted? Is it the type of material used or what? I have several listings for handmade Xmas ornaments and admit I tend to use the words as synonyms and it depends on what comes out of my fingers when I'm typing.

The stitching is completely different.  Knitting is done with two "needles," while crochet is done with a "hook."   That's the short of it.

Look up crochet hook and knitting needles and you'll see the difference.

Both are made with yarn or occasoinally thread.  Finer yarns are more likely to be crochet.

The main difference is in the tools used, and the types of stiches that can be made: A pair of knitting needles, versus a crochet hook.  The knitting needles make a long row of stitches, whereas the crochet hook is one stitch at a time and it's easier to change directon and make odd shapes.  Sweaters are almost always knit; granny-square afghans are crochet.
