How to stop getting scammed by buyers claiming to not receive items

I mostly sell Magic The Gathering cards and average sale is not over 20 dollars so I use the eBay standard envelope. The problem is getting out of hand with people claiming to not receive their orders and eBay always forcing me to refund.  I am really at wits end. I make pennies on these cards after the fees from eBay and my cost for shipping supplies so I can't justify continuing if eBay just refunds the scammers. It is very similar to the DoorDash scam that is out of hand where the delivery driver keeps some of your items and you just have to get a refund in the app no questions asked. Can any veteran sellers let me know a solution? I am about to cancel the orders I have and just pull out of eBay altogether. Thanks in advance for any help.

I stopped selling MTG cards in a retail store in the 00s because of the customer base.

I cannot imagine that same customer base with anonymity.

Probably easier on the nose at least.

Did not bother to read past your 1st couple of lines.  You are just confused. I don't play the "game" you are playing. Your denial of "facts" is enough. A simple process to follow, but as it is not what you want to do.......... it is all wrong.

Re: How to stop getting scammed by buyers claiming to not receive items

Hi @genx-collects, sorry you find yourself in this situation.

On eBay, as discussed, there is a requirement for tracking to protect seller interests from Item Not Received claims. If you cannot afford tracking for delivery confirmation services because your profit margins are too small, then something has to change.

That might mean determining how to sell at improved margins, by bundling, increasing prices, whatever works. Or by selling differently, such as by introducing a product that gives you the ability to adequately compete on eBay. It’s clear the current cards aren’t doing this. You might check out some other popular selling categories/items on eBay at WatchCount.com for ideas.

Honestly, i have never had a buyer attempt to defraud me in the nearly 2 decades i’ve been selling here (this is a posting ID). But all my packages have tracking. So i can give buyers the benefit of the doubt when they report an issue. As a result, I do find it hard to believe that all your buyers are scammers if they reported non-receipt of their cards. There is no way to know for certain without delivery confirmation.

First thing i’d do is send myself a dummy order exactly like a regular sale to see if there's some other reason for a rash of INRs. Bad envelopes? Damage? Sub-par service by the carrier? Or whatever  phenomena there could be in way of explanation. I would definitely do some investigation. But still, on this platform, as i said, sellers need tracking to best protect their interests.

By the way, receiving advice that is hard to hear may be misconstrued by the recipient as an attack, but I read the whole thread, and the only thing i noted were your some of your less-than-cordial answers to tough (but accurate) criticisms. Constructive criticism isn’t necessarily an attack. It is usually an opportunity to evolve, and thus, it is important to learn to accept with good grace.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

USE A BETTER SHIPPING SERVICE and increase your price according. Some items might truly be lost in the mail especially small items in small packaging that gets thrown around and lost in the postal services large sorting bins. It happens all the time with USPS. TRACKING prevents many false item not received claims. If you sell in higher volume on these cards you might be able to afford the better shipping service.
