How to handle this scam?

Sold new full bottle perfume 8/17. Buyer received 8/21.  On 8/30, 9 days later get a message "I received this item but the bottle is empty. Can you advise if I get my money back from you or is this a carrier claim? I asked for photos of the shipping box, the perfume gift box & the bottle. Why would anyone wait 9 days if they paid $150 & received an empty bottle? Radar up......never received a reply.

Now 17 days later, I get a photo of shipping box, the gift box & an empty bottle of perfume. I see no water marks showing leakage & bottle is intact. The message this time is "Here are pics. I don't see apparent damage but don't know condition when sent. Don't see where a leak would have occurred"

I don't keep empty bottles in my house, I know 100% the bottle was new & full. How would you reply? And no, she hasn't opened a case. And I shipped 1st class & didn't buy insurance.

Thanks for any advice

Even if it's past the 30 day MBG, couldn't she still file a claim through Paypal?

I think the exact Shipping Weight is your best friend...for eBay disallowing her fraudulent claim..

The Shipped Weight with the Full Bottle will differ from the package you sent to the package with the Empty

Bottle that she returns...Do not issue a Refund until/unless the bottle is returned..

and the weight is shown..

**Let her know that you know the Shipped Weight.** I hope you do. It is on the receipt

you get from the Post Office...which is a good reason to get those Receipts...

She may have put your perfume in another container.or had an empty bottle of the same fragrance..

These scammers know all the tricks. I would hate to let her win.

Of course the weight will be different: the bottle received is claimed to be NOT FULL empty.

This actually would help the buyer.

Maybe someone else suggested this, but just for giggles...

Do you have another bottle of the same perfume? If so, package it up the same way and check the weight. Can you tell if it matched the one you sent?

If sent by USPS, did you mark it as containing liquid?

Unfortunately, unless you can somehow make a good case with evidence, ebay will probably side with the buyer. Good luck!

Unfortunately, ebay allows all fraudulent claims, and will not accept any evidence by the seller anymore.  The buyer could even say in ebay messages that she spilled it all over the floor, but so long as she picks a "not as described reason" from the dropdown menu THAT IS ALL THAT COUNTS anymore in a return situation.  The reason chosen does not even have to be the truth.

Personally, I agree with the others that chances are she is NOT going to file a claim, at least with eBay.

I had a similar incident many years ago with a buyer claiming an "empty box" via messages.  I responded acting very concerned and personally 'horrified' that this could happen.  Told them I would take care of this right away, and I would file a report on their behalf with the Postal Inspectors, and "what is a good time for them to call on you at this number"? (We could get phone numbers from ebay back then).

Heard nothing for a few days, so I actually DID file, got a case number, and sent it to the buyer so they would know what a good seller I am and how diligently I was working on the problem.   They could use the number to keep abreast of the progress on the case.

Next day,   case closed.
