I sold a guitar on eBay 5 1/2 months ago. The buyer gave me positive feedback. All of a sudden today he messaged me and wants to return it because of a very minor issue. The issue was not present when sold
as I inspect and test everything before shipping. I offered to send him the replacement part but he insists he get a full refund. Now he is threating legal action.

EBAY only has a 30-day money back guarantee. EBAY does not require you to do anything. However, some credit card company allows customers 6-months to try and get "payment reversed".
I would not worry about customer threat of "legal action" most likely a bunch of hot air. Any court in America would side with you because this customer waited 5 months before complaining about defect.

5 1/2 MONTHS ago? Tell the buyer "too bad so sad" and block them.
They don't have any legal recourse and are blowing smoke. Since it's been over 90 days you don't have to worry about bad feedback either.
Worst case scenario they do a chargeback, but there are seller protections in place for that. Perhaps if they hadn't been a jerk you may have been justified in helping them out, but it sounds like they have burned that bridge so now you can just shrug at them.

@popi-1946 Tell them to do whatever they need to do. Wish them a Merry Christmas and block them. They are a nutcase. Don't let them drive you crazy.

Buyers are given a 30 day money back guarantee. They are way past that. My suggestion is to just block this buyer.

Guy tight on cash so he's trying to get his hands on some any way he can?

The only legal action they can attempt is a charge back on their credit card, But you are protected with the seller protections in place, 5 and a half months ago is to late for them to request a return or refund, Just tell them this was not an issue before, & you are sorry for their problem but their is nothing more you can do for them, They gave you positive feedback, They can't change that, So now just block them, & move on, Have a Merry Christmas, Don't let this Grinch ruin it!

You can't prove your statement with just your words. The buyer is way beyond the eBay 30 day money back guarantee. But the buyer can do a credit card charge back to get a refund up to180 days after the sale - eBay has nothing to do with this..

Thanks for taking the time to help me. I blocked him.

That’s what I did. Thanks

All lot of this goes on when folks start working on their taxes, going thru the credit card statements, ebay purchase history. They send out messages about INR and whatknot to see it they can find any suckers to send them money.

hope that the window for cc chargebacks closes soon

There is essentially no Seller Protection for a Not As Described credit card chargeback (Payment Dispute).

The equivalent to digging around in the sofa cushions looking for change.
