I was contacted yesterday by a buyer who was interested in three of my items and asked if I could give them any discount. I said that I was happy to throw in the cheapest of the three items for free (since its cost was marginal compared to the other two) and combine shipping. They agreed, purchased the two more expensive items and asked for an invoice. After sending the invoice, I received a message from the buyer telling me to keep the "complimentary" item and instead give them free shipping. I responded that I could not do that and they returned with telling me to keep the "complimentary" item and discount the cost of the item in the price of shipping. Recognizing a troublesome buyer, I canceled the order, blocked the buyer and responded that I could not offer any of the discounts they were requesting and had canceled the order. They have written back to me this morning, telling me that I was being unreasonable and asking why I had to cancel the order. At this point, should I respond to them in any way or should I just ignore them?

Be careful with "cancelling"...it can get you in trouble around here with seller performance defects. The consequences are quite unsavory.

What reason did you use to cancel their purchases?

You should not have cancelled the sale. They obviously did not request it. You probably just earned yourself a defect.
I would probably have advised them that I could not honor their request for a discount and added to my BBL. I may or may not have reported them for asking for something not in the listing depending upon their reaction to my denial of their request.
