How much time to wait for a buyer to pay?

I know this has been asked a lot but if a buyer doesn’t pay within 48 hours am I allowed to cancel the order? Should I send an invoice, it’s been 24 hours since they won the auction, and I haven’t sent an invoice, I didn’t want to bug them about it. I really get annoyed by buyers not paying quickly. I sell a bit on Etsy and it’s so much better because the buyers have to pay immediately. I really don’t have time for this nonsense of waiting be paid. I may just do buy it now from now on. Thanks for any suggestions.

The buyer knows that he bought and owes you the money.

I believe at 48 hours ebay reminds him.

You can send an invoice if you want to.

I don't get antsy till the 4th day.   Then I'll send a second invoice with a note,  " This is still available and ready to ship"

Relax,     Pushing a buyer to pay  will backfire.

Do NOT cancel.

After 48 hours, if you are US-based* , you can open an Unpaid Item Dispute.

Then the buyer has 96 hours to pay up.

If he doesn't , the transaction is closed, you get your FVF back, the deadbeat gets a Strike on his account and cannot leave feedback**.

If you set it up on your Selling form, eBay will automatically cancel the listing on Day Four.  Which is less work and faster.

* If you are not US-based, the wait is 96 hours /four days.

** You can, but don't.

BIN does not mean immediate payment required.  To achieve that, you need to list with Fixed Price, Immediate Payment Required.

Otherwise, please read the reply that you can cancel after 4 days of nonpayment.

Have never understood why anyone would feel like they have to send additional invoices.

I am under the impression that US based or not, there is no longer an "Unpaid Item case" to open, you just wait till exactly 4 days (96 hours) and then go in and cancel the sale as "Buyer did not pay" (this can be set to happen automatically).  Seller gets fees dropped and can relist, buyer gets UPI strike.

I hear this a lot.

If you can't wait to be paid, why run 7 days auctions?

You already waited 7 days, what difference does a few more days make?

List as a fixed price with immediate payment required and there will be no waiting for payments.

Have a great day.

That information is obsolete. Unpaid item process does NOT work that way any more. It is now a type of cancellation.

If the buyer doesn't pay within 4 full days, the seller will get the option for "Buyer didn't pay" as a reason for canceling the transaction.

So it's now one step that takes 4 days, rather than 2 steps taking 6+ days.

You should read the Hep page about this new process so you can stop giving out old information.

If unpaid after 5 calendar days, you can cancel for nonpayment.

There are no more Unpaid Item Disputes to file, contrary to another comment....this was changed in spring of last year.  Used to be we had to wait 48 hours to file one, then buyers were given another 4 days to pay after that.  At least the new flow cuts it down a little.

eBay sends an invoice, and they send a payment reminder as well.  So we don't do any of that manually.

Your only other option is to set up your listings as Immediate Payment Required, but you can't do that with auctions.

The waiting period is 4 calendar days, not 5: see the link that I provided for the official eBay policy page.

Avoid auctions with best offers.  Fixed price, buy it now with immediate payment required.  That way you'll get instant payments from a serious buyer.   You should also consider accepting returns.  No returns, does not mean no refund.  It's Ebays Money back guarantee &  it will save you some headaches as well.  Good luck.

Yes, I see that now.  I was going by the wording on the actual 2021 spring seller update, but they have changed the wording since then.  Thanks.

It's been my impression that the "old way" remains an option for impatient sellers -- even though it takes longer, and that it is necessary to opt into the "new way" which I agree is much more convenient and effective.

There is only one way now on both .ca and .com and that's the way that was described by nobody's perfect.

Splitting hairs, but the link's wording actually says 1) "after 4 calendar days", 2) "and it's been more than 4 calendar days" and 3) "after 4 or more calendar days". I think you actually have to give it 96 hours plus one second, so I refer to it as 'on Day 5'.

So everyone is automatically enrolled in the "new" Unpaid Item Cancellation system?

Thank you for the confirmation.
