How much of a percentage?

What % do you lose on your sales?  Including S/H, my sale was just shy of $32.  Fees came to just shy of $8.  A 25% loss!  So much for the 13% charge we incur.  Complete lose of the exchange rate for me.  Anyone see a higher fee structure in their sales?  Glad I do a lot more with in-person cash sales!  I keep it all.  🙂  Good luck to all.

You are an experienced seller in Canada.......if you don't know what it's going to cost to sell, you need to go back to square one.  If the amount is unacceptable to you........don't list it........

How much of a percentage?

While sellers need to know the fee in relation to the selling price of the item being sold, eBays fee is based on the total transaction. eBay earns their Commission (final value fee) on not only your item, but also costs (shipping and State Tax) and also earns their Ad Fee based on not only the item you are selling but any shipping charges and State Tax (total transaction).

Since eBay earns a commission on not only your item but your/seller costs (shipping) and sellers' costs (State Tax), the true percentage eBay earns in relation to the selling price of your item can be shocking. Sellers need to know the true cost of selling to be sure they price correctly to make a profit.

At a loss on how you claim your losing. How much did the item cost you? How much did you sell it for? How much did it cost you to sell the item including shipping? If you paid $1 dollar for an item sold at 32 and your fees were 8 that equates to 24 which is a huge return on a 1 dollar item.

I sold the item for $26.95 + $5 S/H.  $31.95.  They subtracted $7.96 for fees.

How much of a percentage?

Most FVFs are now 13.25% on ebay, so I'll use that for my examples. That percentage is calculated on the total price (item price, shipping cost, and sales tax). My example assumes no other fees (PLS, "bold" etc)

1. $100.00 item price, free shipping to a state with no sales tax:

13.25% x $100.00 = $13.25, leaving seller with $86.75 ($100.00 - $13.25) (However, seller has presumably paid some shipping, and that too will need to be deducted from the $100.00 selling price to arrive at the amount seller actually "makes")

2. $100.00 item price, $14.00 shipping, 6% sales tax ($6.00):

13.25% x $120.00= 15.90, leaving seller with $84.10 ($100.00 - $15.90)

3. $100.00 item price, $34.00 shipping, 6% sales tax ($6.00):

13.25% x $140.00= 18.55, leaving seller with $81.45 ($100.00- $18.55)

Now, of course, there are other costs involved here, particularly the amount the seller paid for the item in the first place.

In short, while ebay's FVF IS 13.25%, the IMPACT of the FVF is often higher, because it is calculated on the TOTAL price. This should be obvious to anyone with basic arithmetic skills.

Which means sellers need to estimate the IMPACT of fees when pricing their items (and indeed when buying items, so they are buying at a price that allows them sufficient margin of profit.)

As a seller, I never assume ebay's take will be 13.25% , I ALWAYS assume it will be higher, because most states have sales tax and shipping costs just keep going up.

Any seller who does not comprehend that 13.25% of the ITEM price is different from 13.25% of the TOTAL price should probably consider another line of work.

You can't count shipping as a fee.

It's a cost, not a fee.

FVFee should have been in the vicinity of 4.54...how did the fees come to 7.96?

Not sure what you sold or where it shipped to so I made some assumptions and plugged your numbers into my cost model. Yes the effective fee rate is always higher than the 13.25% because the FVF is applied to the sales tax and shipping. However, shipping is NOT a fee it is an expense. Unless you used/had additional add on fees that you chose, like promoted listings, the calculations should look something like the following. There could also possibly be an international fee but not sure where you shipped this. Any currency conversions related to the transactions would be paid by the buyer.

Zero per cent loss.  I'm no longer an active seller but when I was, I didn't lose on my sales.  I had costs and expenses, which figured into my pricing so that I wouldn't lose money on my sales.  As someone once said, even a Mafioso doesn't expect his gross to be his net.

the farther apart your shipping fees are and the item price then the better the return is going to be.

selling a $10 item + $5 for shipping is going to be less cost effective than selling a $300 item with $5 shipping

I pay 15% for watches but after  my double discount its less

ebay tells me my total percent last year was 17% after shipping which last year was normally just $5

"What % do you lose on your sales?"

Different wording for the same question.
Do many sellers really approach Selling-On-eBay as a losing  proposition?
I mean, in a sense, I might want to get rid of dust-collecting tchotchkes so I (try to) sell them on eBay.

Or t-shirts from a team that lost the Stanley Cup.

Personally, as my selling ID, I estimate I will receive 70% of the price I set for BINs or auction starting price.

Meaning that eBay is estimated to retain 30%.
And if eBay retains less, so much the better for me.
