A client ordered a couple of items from me, after this person received the items claimed that we sent the wrong item and returned fake items to us. I wrote to eBay that I had received a fake item from a person that clearly misused our free returns to take advantage of the system. I also received a message from eBay that says that you don't have proof that the buyer caused the issue (Even thought I sent a picture of the item I received) but yet they took as proof the picture that HE SENT claiming that we sent the wrong item.
We offer free shipping and free returns, we have almost a thousand reviews from our clients and we have hundreds of sales weekly. We have been with eBay for more than 17 years and yet they rather take the word of a person with 3 purchases within the last 6 years.
It was only a $26 dollars transaction, that is nothing. But the fact that eBay believes that a seller like us who have a lot of great reviews, have been with them for 17 years, make hundreds of sales weekly would jeopardize our relationship over $26 dollars it is disappointing to say the least.
My concern is, if this would've been a $5,000 dollar sale, how easy is for someone to take our merchandise, lie to get their money back, and how fast and easy eBay partializes with them without taking in consideration our relationship.
I hope this person continues doing business with them and provide lots of profits since you believe WE ARE at fault here. Not only is a dishonest practice and a CLEAR ABUSE of returns policy and most importantly is THEFT.
I was in the hope that eBay would protect my business and that it was a safe platform to conduct business. But now I am sure I shouldn't take more items into eBay unless I want to put a risk my money and my merchandise.

Yep, I have a 1,200.00 transaction going out today and always I give the sign of the cross as to what will possible happen with these every single day on here. Mantra Ebay and all e-commerce sites ALL RISK ALL THE TIME.

Don't sell $1,200 and $5,000 items on Ebay.
Marked Solution.

It is a wise decision to have a certain dollar limit on here as to how much you may loose. Normally we do not exceed a certain limit per transaction. There are times we get a buyer who purchases more than say 4 to five items. We also put a limit as to how many items a customer can purchase within a specific time frame which you can indicate on your seller hub. Multiple orders exceeding a certain dollar amount must has signature tracking which protects against item not received. False Item not described claims is where you run into problems here. Though the risks are always here, most customers are not scammers. So when I say all risk all the time that is correct because you do not know how a transaction will turn out on here anytime.

Did you report this buyer for return abuse?

Did you file fraud and theft with law enforcement?
This type of person does not stop: it will eventually get the caught, or enough complaints to eBay lose there return privileges in theory..

It would have been just as easy as it was for the $26 item.

If someone did try to do a 5 grand steal from us, I would be contacting them with information filed in their jurisdiction police reported and if nothing sent back mail fraud. I would tell them if they do not comply with my request to return the merch we will also start a small claims court case against them. I may even fly to where they are to do a court case in that kind of situation. People need to get this message you steal you will pay dearly. Either with bad credit, collections, or imprisonment all of which can be done if you pursue it properly.

If I were you I would be messaging this buyer and tell them that even for 26 bucks you are reporting them to the USPS for mail fraud. Tell them that for 26 buck item they could be facing 10 years in prison.

The problem with ebay is how many of these 26 dollar or more scammers are on here and how much cash does ebay have to shell out to protect sellers from these atrocious people. They could be looking at a billion dollar in courtesy refunds for these crimiminals.

I'm just waiting for when a seller gets ripped off for an expensive item, and decides to take matters in its own hand. I mean, after all, you do have the shipping address. What's stopping them from googling the person's name and going to shipping address, scouting the area, and approach the buyer? Will make for an interesting story.

It's NOT an ebay thing.
Buyers have been telling Websites, even stores, that they 'didn't receive' their $500 thingy so the 'website/store' just sends another one.
Buyers have been doing 'chargebacks' on items for both internet and B/M Stores for decades (CB's was a line on our P&L in 1993 (big box store).
Quite nice of you to call them a 'client' but....If a buyer is a thieving liar, there is nothing that can be done. Buyers are ALWAYS favored over sellers on all formats, regardless of 'history' of a seller.
06-22-2022 08:01 AM
Correct, all the contact info is there, location of shipping telephone number. I google these people addresses here all the time to be sure I am not shipping to an abandoned lot or something like that. I do NOT recommend taking matters into your own hands that is DANGEROUS AND YOU COULD BE IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW FOR SUCH BEHAVIOR. HAVE LAW ENFORCEMENT handle it.

< you steal you will pay dearly. Either with bad credit, collections, or imprisonment >
The reason I don't sell on eBay is that I'm afraid that, of those 3 options listed, I would choose option 4. and then I'd be the one facing imprisonment or worse. It flabbergasts me that anyone could be so stupid as to try stealing from someone who knows his identity and location.

I sell on a different free to use site here in Norway where payments are non-refundable and feedback equal. I very rarely have any issues there. Trust based systems solves most problems.
I find it strange how so many subscribe to this idea that it has to be this way.

Is all a buyer has to do is come on these boards and sellers will tell them how to rip them off.
