How common is buyer scams?

I meet an old friend this summer and told him about my relatively new ebay business.

He asked me if many of my customers reported that they never got their order and I told him no.

It has happened in the past when my customers could choose if they wanted me to ship their orders with postal stamps for a lower cost.  Or tracked shipping for a higher cost.

But I stopped doing that after I shipped an order that I sold on auction for around $170 US, and the buyer never got it.

Now I send all orders with tracked shipping or I cancel them if a buyer lives in a country where it's not applicable.

My friend then told me something shocking!

He told me that there is some kind of "scammers info" that you can download with instructions on how to scam sellers on ebay.

It includes some kind of strategy to help the buyer know when to report that they never got an item.

And what cheap stuff to buy in between to get their buyer's grade up so they can report a new lost shipping.

Have any of you other sellers heard about this? Or had many of your shipping gone missing?

Is there nothing that ebay can do to stop these kind of scams?

Have never heard of anything like you describe, won't try to claim it does not exist.

You are already doing all you can to stop scams by making sure every shipment has tracking.

And evidently it's working because you have not had any problems.

Please don't let this scare you away from selling here.

Scammers are everywhere. Not just ebay. There are scammers in places you'd never expect.

Oh yes, there are tutorials for how to go about and make it seem more credible, how to communicate with their victims etc. The way some act and how similar they word themselves etc makes me fairly certain there are step-by-step instructions out there that they follow.

The strategy works because there is no seller protection on ebay.. the best form of protection would be to check for negative feedback, but ebay in their magnificent wisdom found out that buyers with negative feedback were less likely to buy again so they removed the ability so now anyone can buy lots of little trinkets, get good feedback and then once in a while just return a bag of rocks instead of an expensive item and it all seems legitimate which is exactly what happened to me a while back when i sold a $500 coin and got a used USB stick in return. All ebay relies on is tracking info. If the return is marked as delivered they will go ahead and send the refund, you have no say.

The buyer in my case had a long standing account with thousands of transactions, no indications of him being scummy anywhere and the only way ebay will ever take actions against such scum is if it ends up costing them a lot which only happens if there is a police report involved in which case they will reimburse the seller from their own pockets, the "buyer" will get to keep the stolen merchandise and i suspect still be allowed to remain on the site.

The things i've seen and how little action they do against these swindlers is remarkable, they just want to maximize profits at every turn and have made these automated systems they think will work out for them.

I would never ship without tracking for this very reason.

In the case that tracking costs a fortune the buyer should be able to decide for themselves if they want to take the risk and forfeit their buyer protection.

The cost of sending just a letter with tracking is $25 here.

Can't you just record with your phone when you open the returned package?

Ebay does not accept videos or photos of anything sent or received as proof, they can be doctored.
