How can I identify which of my items are subject to insertion fees? Just got dinged on an old listing.
In other words, do we sellers have the ability to "strike first" - if we know eBay will come around and hit us with insertion fees - by deciding whether to continue the listing or end it?

I'm not sure what your situation was but we are only charged listing fees in certain situations such as going over our 'free' listing limit..listing in more than one category...using listing upgrades. Store sellers are also billed for scheduling listings. I'm probably forgetting a few things.
Which listing were you charged for and what level store do you have?

How many listings do you get with your store level?
Anything over that in a month and you'll pay an insertion fee.

If you have exhausted your monthly allotment of free insertions, then ANY listing that is created or relisted or that renews automatically will be subject to an insertion fee.
In other words, whether a listing is subject to an insertion fee or not depends upon the availability of free insertions on your account, not upon the listing itself.
(Note that if your listing is listed in more than one category, the additional categories are not eligible for free insertions and will always be charged a fee. )

The number of free insertions that you get each month is tied to the level of your Store subscription. It's not related to the age of your listings.
Each fixed price listing rolls over every month on the same date as it was originally listed. If a free insertion is available, it will be used regardless of how many previous times the listing has rolled over.
What level of Store subscription do you have? Are any of your items listed in two categories?
