Has anyone had a buyer order an out of stock variation?

We have a listing where one of the variations has been listed with 0 inventory, and has shown a "greyed-out" pull-down option for the variation -- "Birch(out of stock)" -- for months. A buyer recently managed to order one of these with that variation selected on the order email we received ("You've been paid ..."), thusly:

finish: Birch

We did recently switch to eBay managed payments, but nothing else about the account or listing has changed. Has anyone else experienced this? Can't really worry about our metrics on a platform where most metric hits are platform-induced.

We have never had this happen. Doesn't seem like it's even possible to happen. A greyed out variation due to 0 inventory is not order-able at all and shouldn't be.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not news.

New data point: I just noticed this is a new buyer, who signed up on the day they ordered. I wonder if there's something nefarious here ... e.g. someone found a bug, and is either hoping to get concessions from sellers worried about metrics, or is selling services to competition to ding seller ratings.
