To start, the reason I feel that eBay's current war on hand sanitizer is wrong is because they are taking away people's ability to get the products that they desperately need. With most sources dried up, eBay was was the last hope for a lot of people.
And before you all go regurgitating eBay's righteous efforts to thwart price gougers, they could have simply set up a process for people to report price gouging. THAT would keep the vast majority of sellers in check.
I was selling a lot of scented Hand Sanitizers in the 1 ounce Pocketbac style. I actually DROPPED my prices when this all happened so that people could get what they needed. But i do understand if some sellers wanted a small price increase as the laws of supply and demand take effect.
Now I am ok with all my sanitizer listings being removed. I have many other listings to help compensate, and I have been loyal to the eBay community for more than 20 years. I am simply trying to suggest that there may have been an alternate course of action that could have been taken.
Lastly, I am sure that when this is all over, eBay will remove the ban on those categories.
Until then, everyone stay healthy. And like a meme I saw on Facebook...constantly wash your hands as if you just handled chilipeppers and need to put your contacts in. Lol

The ban has created even more panic as people are starting to believe these items are being diverted to "essential" personnel only. Received ended listings today for dial soap, bleach and antibacterial wipes. Price gouging as they call it actually slows down the hoarding making the supplies available to more people and discourages one person from buying six cases of dial soap to keep at their house. The ban has now created panic and full fledged hoarding across the entire country. Aloe and rubbing alcohol sales have now taken off but I am sure E-Bay will ban those items soon also. Other online venues do not currently have this ban so that is where people are shopping now.

Not really addressing the ebay ban but...
I just made my first batch of homemade hand sanitizer and I love it. Very inexpensive comparatively and easy to make, and fun; my dog could do it if he had a wooden spoon and a mixing bowl. I added some essential oil 🍊for a pleasing fragrance. I will never buy another commercial product.
There are many recopies edit recipes and advice online. The commercial ones, I have learned contain many harsh and unneeded toxic and hormonal disrupter ingredients. Who needs that?

So you are going to trust that the reports would be accurate? That some sellers wouldn't just report their competition to get them off the site.? And then too, what about those sellers who are mislabeling hand lotion to be hand sanitizer? Those have the potential of actually harming people......or at least exposing them to harm.
Of course ebay would have to adjudicate all the reports "to be fair"..... So would have to hire hundreds of people to make decisions on who can list at what price.....something that will never work......... In fairness you couldn't say the price before x date was "fair" because suppliers have very likely increased their price in the interim.
My opinion, they did the best thing..........

That might have just made your product more appealing to resellers.
eBay DID try asking sellers to report gouging on Feb 28, then they resorted to the ban on March 5 so apparently the reporting system wasn't working out. You can check the two Announcements, just click on the link at the bottom of the page.
There are some great memes re: "wash your hands as if": As if you just ate a bag of Cheetos and now you're going to crochet with pure-white yarn. As If you got a club stamp that you don't want your mom to see...

Then if someone wanted to do a search by lowest price and shipping those would come up first causing the sellers that think price gouging is the way to go to maybe rethink their pricing strategy. Sad some need to ruin it for the people doing things honestly.

eBay is not the sole source of these items. Few, if any, are being deprived by eBay's actions.

I don't know the ACTUAL cause, but when I went to two local shops to replenish my supply of isopropyl alcohol this morning, both shops were a bit confused as to why people had been in and bought all of the alcohol, hand sanitizer, and wipes they had in stock over the past few days. It looks like I will have to start wiping myself down with vodka before I give myself my twice daily injections..................but I draw the line at using gin for the same purpose...................gin was invented solely for the life saving purpose of dry martinis...................

vodka may suffice for the wipedown.......but I saw where one vodka maker said his was only 40% alcohol so wouldn't suffice for the CDC guidelines..... Grain alcohol probably better as I think it's a higher %.....

Sellers were warned before about their pricing, but that didn't do any good.

Price gouging is a crime. One person sells hand sanitizer for $50 on ebay, and reported or not, a crime has been committed.
There are 50 states. That's 50 Attorney's General who I have no doubt would love to get tough on people who use people's fear and desperation against them in a pandemic for profit. Speaking of making an example...remember Napster? I barely do...
If I were ebay, I would run from any potential criminal litigation like it were the plague, so to speak. If I were ebay and a state decided to go after an ebay seller for price gouging and named the company in the criminal complaint, I would really, really want to be able to say "we shut down sales of x, y, and z products in response to concerns over price gouging" rather than "we asked people to report criminal behavior for which we are potentially legally exposed after it occurred".

And you believe this wasn't the result of a shortage, or media coverage, or general panic or fear? That is was a direct result of eBay's ban?
