Hello,
Is this really happening? Ebay wants my SSN to generate a 1099k or they won't give me my payouts, from selling.

Yes it is really happening. If you remember PayPal also had your SSN and probably still does.

So it is safe to respond to Ebay and give them my SSN?

Yes and no. Prior to the existence of the 1099k PayPal had no need to have to have your SSN. After 1099k's became a thing (2010?) they did start collecting them but up until recently that was mostly done for sellers who exceeded or were close to the reporting thresholds.
When eBay because a payment processor they made it policy to collect SSN's from ALL sellers no mater their volume. They did so because they didn't want to be in the position PayPal found themselves in, chasing after sellers for the info AFTER they had exceeded the reporting limits.
Personally eBay never asked me for my SSN as I never exceeded the threshold in the 1099k days.

Yes.........

Yes, it is safe to respond to an eBay message, to provide them the info they have requested.
You will get a 1099-K from eBay at the end of January 2023, or early February, IF your sales during 2022 add up to more than $600.00.

PayPal has always had my SSN from the time I opened the account and eBay requested it when I moved into MP. So it is probably a hit and miss with both eBay and PayPal as I never exceeded the thresholds in the beginning either.

People really need to quit using this as a blanket answer. There are a LOT of states that have had the lower reporting thresholds in place for quite some time and sellers have been getting 1099's for several years. Sellers need to check their state 1099 reporting laws failure to do so may lead to problems.

Think about this. How many apps do you have on your phone that are accessing information about you, your pics, your messages, etc., and sending it to whomever pays for it?
That should be a bigger concern than providing your SSN to a payment processor.

Well, I don't like the way Ebay accomplishes the requirement, by not giving me my payouts unless I comply with their demands. Seems like they're holding my payouts as ransom.

They are required to collect that information for payment processing. I doubt if they are excited about dealing with it on a daily basis.

Yes, that's exactly what they're doing. Because the law requires them to submit a 1099-K, which they cannot do if they don't have your SSN. Rather than be out of compliance with the law, they will hold off on making the funds transfer.

Yes it’s safe!!

I never came anywhere close in PayPal either and they still made me give them my SSN years ago.

Same. I've had a Paypal account since 2000 (three years before I had an Ebay account lol) and I had to give them my SSN, if not at that time it was shortly thereafter.
