Gift Card Scam

I just sold two Chipotle gift cards. One had $10.00 on it and the other had $20.00 on it.

I got them from a friend for Christmas and my birthday.

I never used them. I checked the numbers with the Chipotle website before sending them out.

The buyer claims that one has 8 cents on it and the other one nothing.

This is simply not possible. I am a top rated seller and would never sell them if they did not have the amount stated on them.

This is probably a situation where I cannot prove that he used them and wanted to return them...

Ideas? Suggestions? This is so unfair...

Re: Gift Card Scam

When did the buyer receive them?

Can you call and find out if they were used since then?  Then you would know the buyer used them

Or verify the money is still in there?

LOL   my wife and I thank you for the free dinner,

But Chipotle made my belly burn... SNAD.

Selling gift cards is a sure way to get ripped off.

You can't prove what you sent, good card, empty card.

Ebay will find for the buyer every time.

Sure you can call the card number and see it was used after you sent it.

But  for the most part, no there is nothing you can do about it.

Re: Gift Card Scam

Just curious, but can the OP cancel the cards?

Re: Gift Card Scam

He purchased them on the 14th, I mailed them on the 14th and he got them on the 18th.

He has just sent me another message with screen shots of the card accounts.

They show that they were both used on the 14th.

I have no idea how this could be unless someone opened the package and used them.

Re: Gift Card Scam

If it were me I would  call the numbers on the cards and verify that the information the buyer is showing you is correct.

And then maybe they can tell you what happened to the funds.

Do they expire after a certain amount of time?

I don't think they can after the cards have been used.

Re: Gift Card Scam

For heaven's sake people.

The buyer paid $28 for $30 worth of gift cards?

Do we really need to debate whether this is a scam?

Well, people can fake screen shots, and make it look like it was used the same day you sent out.

The chances of someone committing a federal crime ( mail theft ) are slim to none.

As Auntie Em said, you can call the card number, and find the real dates it was used.

But even then, there is not a lot you can do, the money is gone.

Well, it is Friday night, nothing on TV, what else do we do for entertainment.

Re: Gift Card Scam

of course. the buyer says there was no money available on them so he did a not as stated return demand. Now, she has to send him money that's she's already lost. That's terrible.

Re: Gift Card Scam

This guy is too much - this is what he is saying now...

And by the way, I am being very reasonable about this considering it was rather embarrassing to hand over two gift cards that basically took 8 cents off my order and all this to save $2.00 off of $30.00. I have never had an issue as a buyer or seller on ebay for the 16 years that I have been a registered user.

Re: Gift Card Scam

Sorry to hear this. I don't know what process people do to protect themselves from this. It's just like mailing the person cash and they say they never got it.  Even if it is blatent fruad Ebays policy'[s side with the buyer.

This happened to me once when  a seller wanted me to pay by buying him a gift card. I didn't get the item ann he cashed out the gift cared and reported me for not paying him.  It was twisted. Luckily it was just $18.00.  Boy, lesson learned the hard way I'm aftraid.

Re: Gift Card Scam

OP, sorry that someone would do this to you.

Not that it makes you feel better, but it is very hard to successfully sell gift cards.

You might consider just giving it as a gift to someone.

Write it off as a business expense, especially such a low-dollar amount.  That's a risk you take selling gift cards.
