It has gotten to the point of ridiculousness how many sellers are using this feature. When I see the same generic description being ran on auctions where I find it imperative to have details and measurements,...I move on.
Sellers,...take the time to PERSONALIZE your descriptions by expending a bit of effort!

i use AI for some descriptions, but I also give it the information I want included in the description.
I don't use the Ebay AI, but I've seen the descriptions it gives and I wouldn't use it.
It might be OK for new items, but when your listing used items, you need to describe the item in the condition it is now, not as it was when it was new.

At this point, I don't like anything about eBay's AI. I say "at this point" because I'm certain it will improve with time, but so far, there's nothing about it that I like. The descriptions are florid, overblown, and cheesy, and those backgrounds....ucccch! You can't even tell what's being sold. Why the hell would I want a deck of cards or a backpack sitting in the middle of the road or out in the desert???
What I would love to see is the AI being used in a manner akin to grammarly or some similar software program. Give us clean, accurate descriptions and clear backgrounds. Let it create a carousel of our pics showing all angles of our items (better yet, keep the dang AI and just get the video to work properly). Help us remove extraneous garbage in our listings rather than making them absurd and unbelievable. Let it figure out when a scan is missed by a human, or figure out when we're about to screw up a listing. There are a million useful things AI could be used for on this platform. So far, we don't seem to be seeing any of them.
It's like they gave us a Bugatti to get our grocery shopping done. How about nice trusty little Honda with good gas mileage, a clear and readable dashboard display, and lots of space in the trunk?

What I don't understand is why they sell so well. Shocking to me that buyers will make purchases with so little meat in the description such as size and condition.

Completely agree.
When I buy clothing here I want a REAL description with measurements.
Those AI descriptions are ridiculous.
They tell me everything EXCEPT what I need to know.
None of that helps me to decide to purchase or not.
If clothing sellers want more sales then do the work
necessary to help buyers decide.

I'm getting fed up reading how wonderful an item is and how it will enhance my life.
If I'm lucky the seller will have added a line at the bottom describing the items condition. If not I move on, just annoyed that my time has been wasted.

I totally agree. Myself as a buyer I tend to think listings with AI descriptions are from a lazy or evasive seller and move on. I might be right or wrong in my assesment but I don't like to have to message a seller for information that should be in a listing that AI didn't include. I also don't need to hear how it will enrich my life and make a great addition to my collection etc. A bunch of word salad that has nothing to do with the item listed.
Sometimes I bite the bullet so to speak and do ask questions on items that are hard to find. Sometimes the answers I get are "read the description" or the seller can't seem to understand what I mean by asking for and end view or certain measurements etc. and then understand why they used AI in the first place. A waste of my time and time to move on and look elsewhere.

Not sure they really sell that well. Would be interesting to see some real stats, but I doubt that will happen.
It's been 20 months now that this AI poop has been pushed on everyone. It was April 2023 when it began out of nowhere.
I expect more open cases of issues as you stated with size and condition.
When I see such a listing, I move on 90% of the time.

I seriously doubt that its use really helps anything.
More generally, when all it can do is draw on descriptions from supposedly similar listings (either by that seller or by others), and some percentage of those other examples were also burped out by the AI app, they're all going to eventually converge in one big, beige, amorphous word salad of must-have adjectives. It simply cannot generate something new to say every single time because it's eating its own dog food.
