I was just reading this board and went to look at the items for sale of the person posting the discussion and saw an option to friend the person.
I never ever saw that option on eBay before.
Is eBay trying to become like Facebook now?

@dhbookds I can confirm, it's not something new. I joined this community in April 2020 and it was an option then as I have some on my list that go back that far.

And I just friended you.
I wonder if this “new” function just changed names.
We used to have followers…
Now maybe it’s called friends?

@jewelbiz as far as I know, it's always been "friends" here in the community (at least since I've been a member). "Followers" is for your eBay account profile (for buying and selling), not your community profile, and you still have those too.

Ah, now the ignore shows, when you click on see friends and I see one from 2022..........but I don't see a way to put someone on the ignore list........lol.............we've been asking for that forever........ they must be changing things as that manage friends popup did NOT show a few minutes ago........

I'm not seeing a way to put someone on the ignore list. Maybe it's just there for looks.

It's not a new option, it goes back more than 10 years, at least. It started with one of the major forum updates; I think when they went to Lithium in 2011 (IIRC). I was aware of it back then, I have a lengthy list of friends because it was an easy way to get to their recent posts or contact them when I wanted to.
My earliest Friend (who has a last-visited date) is from July 2013. But I have a number of user IDs that are friends from before that, they just don't have a status or last-visited date. A number of those are moderator IDs, with "li-" in the user ID, which was for Lithium employees working on the boards. That's why I think it was from when they changed to Lithium running the boards.

I think you can only Ignore someone from a message they have sent you in private messages. The Ignore feature blocks them from sending you any messages (or maybe it just doesn't deliver the message, not sure which).
It doesn't stop you from seeing their public posts, just stops them from sending you private messages.

The old old boards had an actual ignore function that would completely hide posts by users you found disruptive or annoying and it did wonders for the boards harmony.
When Lithium/Khoros took over, that function was removed and I asked why/if it would come back. Their answer was that “an ignore feature wasn’t part of the environment they wanted to foster”.
I guess the mods need the occasional flame war so they can edit/remove posts and put users on vacation and justify their job.

I opened this expecting the thread to be several years old because the "friend" option has been around for a very long time. Perhaps Khoros changed and put the button in a new place? Looks the same to me on user profile pages. Screenshot posted upthread is how I've always seen it.
If memory serves, the only thing "friends" affects is on the settings > preferences > privacy page where you can allow friends to see your online status, your personal email, your private profile info, etc. And then on the home your profile page there will be a friends box that shows you which of your friends are online if your friends have that setting checked off.
I don't think "friends" does much more than that.

That's been there for a while.

The "ignore" feature was from Live World, I believe (the bolt-on forum we had before this one). I remember when "ignore" was first implemented - whole long thread with one after another post assuring everyone that "they didn't need the ignore...they were mature enough...really, isn't that childish", etc. etc.
A month later "Where was that ignore feature again?" 😂
