Fraud

Hi eBay Support Team,

Today, I was scammed by a user on eBay, who is both a buyer and a seller on the platform.

This individual took an iMac from me but did not complete the payment.

My listing was for collection only. He collected the iMac and promised to pay, initially agreeing to send the money to my bank account. This was at 10 AM in the morning. Now, it's past midnight (00:11), and he is not responding to my messages.

Can eBay do anything in this situation, or is it pointless to pursue further? I have photos of him putting the iMac in his car, along with his number plate and mobile phone number.

I am considering going to the police to report this incident. However, I would like information from eBay as well, especially since he is a seller and might have multiple accounts. eBay likely has logs of user activities and IPs, which could be helpful. Additionally, my message history with him can be reviewed to understand our communication.

I feel terrible about this situation. Trusting others has resulted in a loss of around 500 pounds for me. It's a sad story, and I hope there is a solution. Otherwise, it seems like anyone can commit crimes in London....

Looking forward to your assistance.

Thanks.

@bklisarski

If the listing was on ebay and was local pickup (which it seems to be), why did you go "off site" to meet the buyer?

What you should have done was have the buyer buy it, pay for it and then, then a QR code would be scanned to verify that he received it.

When you have an item as local pickup, they need to buy it from the listing!

Yep, that sounds right but later on in the messages, he says I will pay you when I get home, etc, admitting he hasn't paid yet 😄

and then I went over and paid him, in cash, in person. This person is simply lying- trying to get his 'thing' back for free!

When I read the OP's message, it doesn't seem like the sale was taken off eBay, or at least it was not the seller's intention.  He apparently listed it with local pickup, buyer came to pick it up and that's where the deal fell apart because the OP was in his own words "too trusting".

It's important you follow eBay policy when you are offering pickups in order you don't  get screwed.

Here is the policy for offering local pickup.
