Fraud

Has anyone who is a seller ever had someone send you a check for well over what your item cost nearly $3000 vs $1000 and then ask for you to send the rest to someone who is picking up the item? This happened to my young daughter this week.  They are refusing to write another check saying this one has already been issued to her by their bank. We have the check but will not be cashing it. I have contacted eBay. If this has happened to you, what did you do?  They also have our address. I hate this kind of stuff!!

Since everyone has so expertly addressed the check thing, I have only one thing to add;

Do NOT worry about them having your address- I guarantee you they will NOT be showing up at your house. They are criminals yes but the nameless, faceless, cowardly type..

This is what I was going to write. Anyone can get your address by Googling your name. That means nothing in this day of the internet for everyone. The last thing these scammers would do now is to contact you at your home where the police could be waiting for them....

Re: Fraud

That is why ebay wants electronic payments.

That is why ebay has policy on doing off ebay sales or purchases (the extra money was not a part of ebay.)

The seller should never allow personal  contact outside of ebay messaging until the payment has been made online. Then go through ebay channels to request that info.

@tribalmember : Was this for a vehicle, boat or trailer? Please click the Reply button and give us a little more detail on how this happened.

Re: Fraud

What I want to know is how it got the point of a check. Checks aren't able to be used anymore for anything on ebay except local pickup unless I am wrong? And I wouldn't think anyone would take a check even for that... is it an e-check? Those are fraud 99.999% of the time too I think. 😄

Re: Fraud

Sounds like a variation of the Vehicle Scam where you are selling a car and the buyer pays full purchase price plus a couple of thousand extra dollars for the vehicle to be delivered.  You receive a fake PayPal notice of payment being made.  Shortly thereafter you receive message stating PayPal will not release the money until the Delivery Driver is paid $2000.

I just tell them not to worry because Pablo has already picked up the vehicle and will be there with the vehicle in about 45 days.

Re: Fraud

SCAM!

This one predates the internet.

Don't cash it.

EBay does not allow payment by cheque or money order,by the way.

Don't ship anything.

Don't let anyone pick up anything.

If they get belligerent, call 911.

Re: Fraud

I'd tell them you deposited and that you will buy whatever gift card of cash they need and will it have it on hand when the item is picked up.  Either give them police stations address or let them pay to send someone to pick something up they can't have.  Good fun either way and they lose some time and money because there's pretty much no chance they ever get in trouble.  The probably make a far better living than any of us sadly...

Toying with morally reprehensible people is rarely a good idea...
