So let's continue talking about the jewelry authentication program and how flawed it is. Here is another story to tell. I sold a vintage 18k gold ruby diamond elephant ring that failed inspection because it X-ray tested at 17.3k, the elephant tested at 14k and the ruby stone had a chip. Okay I will take part responsibility for this. Let me be clear though.... the ring is vintage before 1981 so its common for gold to come in less than what is stamped, secondly,I had no way to test the white gold elephant because it was an ornament on the band. I did not want to acid test it in fear of damaging the gold nor could I electronically test it because I needed the back of the elephant to touch the plate and the back was attached to the gold band. Lastly they stated I did not mention the chip in the ruby stone but clearly it was pictured and listed in the paragraph details... apparently they can not read or see. Ok so they returned it. I relisted the item with the 2 new details. One the elephant is 14k and 2 the ring X-ray tested at 17.3k by ebay authentication program. In my item specifics I listed the ring as 14k just to cover all my bases. Also, under the title in the box for "condition" I stated again the item tested 17.3k by ebay. The item sold again and I sent it off to the authentication center. I included a copy from themfrom the first failed attempt with their reasons they gave me alone with the ring. I made sure to tell them to look at all my pics and to read the listing details. I also made them aware that in their first message to me the ring failed because it tested at 17.3k and I had adjusted my new listing to reflect this. The item was delivered to the center but I noticed it was taking a long time to authenticate which is a bad sign. I called and they told me that the ring was X-ray testing at 17k and they were trying to reach the buyer to see if she still wanted it.. Think about that for a moment. It goes to the center the first time, is X-ray tested at 17.3k failed,I adjust the listing accordingly to the details provided to me by the authentication center ,it sells again and almost fails because now the person using the xray machine is testing it at 17k. The buyer wanted the item and accepted it as is. The buyer then sent me a message that stated the authentication center called her and for her to tell me the ring tested at 17k. LOL....No eBay authentication center how about telling the buyer that the ring was tested by you the first time as 17.3k and now it is testing at 17k and that the machine is not accurate. Who is to say if the ring was tested a 3rd time it might come in at 17.5 or even 18k. This is so messed up..including pics from the listing and communication from ebay and the buyer. I have blocked out the buyer's id name.

Even with experts, they can differ on their reports. Happens all the time with coins, cards, art works. Just part of doing business here.

Had 2 items returned this week by GIA both sold as 14K solid yellow gold but when they tested only came back as 13K. They are correct. My problem is both buyers still wanted the items. I just wish before being returned to me they could reach out to the buyer, give them the results and ask would they still want to receive the item. heymike53 (seller 23 years)
