Why is eBay charging me a fee after a bidder requested to cancel their bid?

Instead of doing the right thing and charging the buyer the 30 cents processing fee, eb does the wrong thing and charges the seller on a buyer cancelled sale.  I raise the price of the relisted item 50 cents to make myself feel somewhat better.

eBay has no effective means of charging buyers.

If you think about your own buying, every single buyer payment is initiated by the buyer and not by eBay.

Buyers can change accounts like they change underwear, so billing a buyer is kind of pointless.

And even if they did, think about it - eBay would be incurring the cost of processing a payment in order to collect the cost of processing a payment.

Hi luckythewinner - Inhawaii says you are always right. I am amazed to find out that ebay is so frail that they may just go out of business & be forced to close their doors at the loss of 30 cents. That there amigo, is another prime sign of ebay's massive greed.  L

I did not say that eBay was so frail they may go out of business.

I simply gave a logical reason why eBay would recover the processing fee from sellers.

Which, if you recall, was the question that the OP asked.

As for greed ... eBay is a for profit company, so greed is a given. No argument there.

Hi Luckythewinner - The frail business was my pitiful attempt at humor. The 30 cent thing is a particular bone of contention with me. I remember that my Mom once had a yard sell. She had already priced stuff low, low. Anyway, she had something marked for a dime, & someone had the nerve to ask if she would take a nickel. For some odd reason that has stuck with me. I think it is called nickel & diming someone to death, & here I mean ebay. Surely they could find some way to live without taking 30 cents from people. Have some pride in yourself, ebay.   Oh well,  L

Were you as vocal here about PayPal's almost identical policy of keeping the 30 cent processing fee? They have been keeping the 30 cent processing fee from seller refunds since 2010.

That aside ...

By not giving the yard sale buyer a nickel discount, weren't you and your mother nickel-and-diming as well? 🤣

Hi Lucky - If I had known & was posting, I would have been as vocal about pp. It is truly shameful, in my opinion.  L

Hi - I feel a bit silly for asking, but what does this mean?  L

Hi Lucky - I never said she did not give the discount. Anyway, the point was about the cheapness of some people. Then a shift to comparing them to ebay. Why are you feeling so compelled to side with ebay, if you don't mind me asking?   L

Did you cancel the Bid or the Transaction?  How much were you charged?

The $ .30 fee is a charge for processing the payment. When a buyer pays for an item, that payment is indeed processed, hence the fee.

Why would any payment processer process the payment for the transaction (which is what they're getting paid $ .30 to do), and then give that fee back if the sale is cancelled?

The processer performed their service, and now you don't want them to get paid for it? You expect them to process that payment free? That doesn't sound like a great business model . . .
