Why does Ebay charge fees on shipping?

If this was implemented to prevent sellers from listing items at a low cost and moving the cost to shipping to exploit FVF, why not implement the fees on those transactions only? I’d imagine these transactions are not buying the shipping label through Ebay. 

If we are declaring the shipment weight/dimensions and purchasing the label through ebay, the shipping should be accurate.

If a label is purchased through ebay, does a shipping fee reimbursement sound logical?

Why does Ebay charge fees on shipping?

To make money

The whole shipping fiasco you are talking about gave eBay and excuse and  justification to charge FVF on shipping charges.

Why would they relinquish that money maker now that it's been accepted?

How in the world could ebay police millions of listings as to who  was/wasn't shifting costs?  And sure they could buy labels on ebay......and if ebay had started to try to police it, they simply would have bought the labels off ebay.........  Remember also that people who had free shipping paid the fvf on the shipping because the shipping was added into the item price.

It's a moot point because it isn't going to change after 10 years..........and there are a 100 if not 1000 threads on it.  If you want to read the arguments, do some searching for threads.

Given the millions of transactions that occur daily on this site, the matrix that would have to be created to determine if shipping on each individual item (for all forms of shipping, all weights, all sizes, all conditions) is accurate or not would be mind-blowing in its complexity.  Also, they already tried limiting shipping around ? 2009 or 2010 and it didn't work very well.

Not all sellers buy shipping labels. I normally use stamps and ship by lettermail without tracking.

And we international sellers face much higher costs for shipping than most Americans understand.

While I can send a 500 gram package to a Canadian address for$5.47 +tax (lettermail/ untracked), the same package would cost $11.41 (lettermail/untracked)  or $$17.71 (Tracked Package USA) to the States.

I have to use Flat Rate Shipping when I list here on dotCOM, and it is not unusual for me to stop listing an item when I find the cost of shipping will be greater than the price of the item.

Ok, so they charge on shipping to make everything equal, whether you offer free shipping, charge shipping, or offer low price item but high price shipping to exploit FVF like you said.

If you buy a label on ebay, at the retail counter of USPS or on pirate ship or other 3rd party shipping label site, you pay shipping FVF. You want to disincentivize those who use USPS retail counter (many people) or those who use 3rd party shipping label sites? You want everyone to use ebay labels only? Doesnt work for some people! Some people havent bought a postage scale or dont have a printer or dont want the "hassle".

You want them to refund FVF on shipping? They take a portion of your FVF to pay Ayden who processes the charge. 2.9% or whatever. Ebay has to process the payment for shipping from the buyer...actually, ebay probably has to pay to process your ebay shipping label payment too.

In the end. Ebay is a business like you and me. They need to make money. If they charge you less on FVF because they dont charge FVF on shipping fees, they aren't going to just keep charging the same FVF minus shipping FVF ...they arent gunna give up revenue. Businesses only seek to grow revenue not lose it. So if they take away shipping FVF they'll start charging higher FVFs on the items then. You want that?

That would be less fair to me, someone who ships light weight items and has low shipping costs, because ill pay higher FVF when my shipping FVF is small just to save you or someone else their higher shipping FVF on a larger heavier and more expensive shipment.

So really, keep paying your shipping FVFs, I'm fine with mine and i dont want my overall FVFs to increase just because you dont want to pay yours. Want lower FVFs on shipping? Sell lighter weight items or choose cheaper shipping methods.

ALL payment processors charge fees on the TOTAL transaction. It's that simple. And yes, Paypal did it as well.

Why would you need to police labels purchased through ebay?

The weight, dimensions, and courier is specified. If this was falsified, the courier would reject the shipment.

     Mostly because they can. It's their site their rules. This question has been asked 1.000's of times and generally multiple times per week. The answers to your questions can be found in the 1,000's of other responses to the same question.

So you’re okay with ebay charging you a fee on shipping yet you are the one going to a 3rd party shipping company to ship the item? Ebay does nothing yet still collects a fee on you.

Fee for processing the payment is already accounted for in the FVF of the item itself not the shipping cost.

- Yes, and now you are paying shipping FVF twice! You sell your item + shipping, ebay collects its fees on both. You go out to purchase shipping and pay FVF again on your shipment?

This fee structure prevents cheap, heavy items from being sold on ebay. If the buyer is willing to pay actual shipping cost, the seller should get its fair share for the item itself. Item minus FVF of item cost.

A payment processing fee is completely different from a FVF.

Because PP only charged 2.9%, plus .30, and yes they charged that on the whole transaction,including shipping and taxes.

I just signed up for Etsy to vary my sales platform online, and their fees are exactly the same.   Most stuff on Etsy is the same, is Etsy owned by eBay?
