Extreme winter storm

How are you going to deal with the epic winter storm that is supposed to spread across 30-40 States starting tomorrow?  I imagine too many will see a large impact on sales?  They figure 235 million will be affected by it.  We are supposed to get our dose of it, In Ontario on Sunday.  Only 8 ins. here.  However, MANY days of windchill making it feel before -3F during the day & -14F at night.

Re: Extreme winter storm

Since most of our items have longer processing times, and I'm in NYC, I'm not too concerned. It will be business here as usual. NYC Sanitation is all ready to get the streets cleared so our pick ups will hopefully continue within our shipping time.

Good luck everyone!

I am thinking Internet may go down so little to no sales, but I would like to be proven wrong.

Re: Extreme winter storm

Increased my handling time by 1 day.  Getting all my errands done momentarily, so I don't have to go out.  Just the usual.

Where I live, seeing 15 to 20 F below zero is what we expect. There's blowing snow outside, about 2 inches in my driveway and it's so bitter cold I'm not going to deal with it until tomorrow afternoon (when it's going to only be 5 or 10 below. (Trying to say in F degrees for our US friends, although I'm not good with that - for the Canadians I mean -17C right now and -12C tomorrow).

I didn't go out today because the roads are terrible and I had to go to work so I stayed in at lunch instead of driving around the city getting my car stuck on ice in the bitter cold. (My car now has non-clumping kitty litter, Alaskan Ice melter, and a small shovel in case I get stuck again, it's hours to wait for a tow truck here).

I told my buyers of last night I wouldn't ship until Monday, they're all responding that they're putting up with a storm this weekend too (I got complaints from Texas and Wisconsin from buyers who identified where they live during the storm). Hopefully I will be able to go out Monday after all this drama, but I'm going to hurry up and pack orders and keep in contact with buyers.

On Monday I work at home, but will go out to mail stuff so long as the main roads are clear. That's the problem here right now, even the main roads are slippery and cars are getting stuck. I was a little stuck at an intersection and missed the green light as a result... guy behind me wasn't too thrilled, but my wheels were spinning and I wasn't moving very fast.

Driving around is all too much stress... perhaps I should take a taxi and let the driving be someone else's problem.

One of my customers is in Wisconsin and complained he was going to be hit with the storm soon (that was yesterday that he said that, not sure when it's actually going to hit the midwest). In Ontario the snow is supposed to come Sunday and Monday.

I looked up your home town.

Kinda cool what I found pictured.

I live several miles out in the country.  I've never lived in a town in my life because I grew up on a farm.

It frustrates me to hear some claim it's just snow, as if there is no need to be concerned at all.  Yes, we get snow most years, but the extreme amounts and temperatures are dangerous, and unfortunately there will be deaths.

The mid-west provinces in Canada have a lot of homeless, a lot of isolated communities, and losing power can last for days, provisions can run out. They're going to see 40 below this week. (F or C, it's the same temperature on both scales).

No problem shoveling the snow.  The problem is the plow putting the heavy ice chunks in front of my driveway, I clean that up using more strength, and then they come and do it again, making me re-shovel the area.  There should be fines on snow-plow drivers who continually block driveways with street ice/snow (I mean we pay high property taxes just for that not to happen).

As for eBay, no problems at all.  Saturday and Tuesday are shipping days like nothing happened.  Just put handling time to 48 hours.

Re: Extreme winter storm

There have been a few very serious cold weather power outages in our northern  communities. In one of them, the power was out for days. Residents were evacuated and finally had to get the Canadian Military in to help them thaw pipes and get things back to normal.

Please be really smart during these winter storms - even if the temperature is reasonable, vehicles can drift off the highway and be buried in snow. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle, just in case.
