Ebays definition of new makes no sense to me

Ebays definition of new is "A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item (including handmade items). See the seller's listing for full details."

How am I supposed to know if an item I'm selling is damaged when I'm not supposed to open it?

I sold a Brand new model railroad HO boxcar in it's original package. The buyer claims a couple pieces came unglued and detached. They are accusing me of lying in the description.

If an item becomes unglued, is that a damaged item? Because the buyer opened an item damaged case.

Report the buyer.  That's all you can do.  I recently had a transaction where a buyer clearly broke a brand new item and then claimed it was damaged in shipping.  I promptly refunded him, added the loss to my 2025 losses file (for taxes), and then reported him for abusing the returns process.  It's really the only thing you can do.  It won't do anything to alleviate your frustration in the short term, but eBay does ding the buyer and enough of these dings will change the status of the user's account.  In my case, the buyer, who is also a seller, has lost his selling account.  The loss probably wasn't the result of my report, but the report in conjunction with other reports probably contributed to the change in status.

Yea, any buyer who blames a seller for this clearly plays the victim card all too much. We've all gotten these types of buyers. Most of the time they'll eventually calm down with you once you reply or they find another schmoe to direct their yelling towards.

PS:  I  feel more than very confident  that the Khoros  "spell check" software went to the lower than the lowest bidder.  It just gave me on way  off base spelling correction  option when I typed Kjoros.  Friggin' amazing.

Maybe the train's packaging is lined with lead.
