Ebay said I didn't have to accept return & return request has been closed. Now buyer opened a case?

On Feb 10 buyer apparently opened a return request saying, I need to return this item as it does not fit my model of car. The listing said it would but, it does not. Can I get a return shipping label as soon as possible. Among the choices Ebay gave me was to deny the request which Ebay said would automatically close the request. Isn't this the end of it? I thought once this was closed, the only thing the buyer could do was leave bad feedback. Today I see buyer opened a case. How can they do that when the return request was closed?

When the buyer opened the return it is called a request.  When you denied the return the buyer asked eBay to step in.  When seller or buyer asks eBay to step in eBay calls that opening a case.  It’s is basically like an appeal.

OK but Ebay said I didn't have to accept the return, and if so, the request would be closed. It didn't mention that even if it was closed, they could open a case and have a second try to return it.

If I did accept the return originally, is it true they would only get back the cost of the item but not the shipping cost I charged them or the shipping cost to send it back to me?

And what's the feedback situation here were Ebay refunds the buyer? Can they still leave me negative feedback?

You denied the Buyer's Remorse return request, and it closed.

The buyer then contacted eBay directly

- explained that they misunderstoodedly [sic] selected a "buyer's remorse" return reason like "Doesn't fit"

- when they should have selected an "item not as described" return reason like "Wrong item sent"

- and eBay opened a case on the closed request, assigned* that reason, and gave the buyer a curtsy refund.

Yes, on an accepted buyer's remorse return request

- the buyer pays for return shipping, and

- the seller has the option to withhold original shipping from the refund after the item is returned.

Feedback from a buyer is blocked if they didn't pay, or blocked/removed when they lose a case. Otherwise, a buyer can leave feedback if they paid. The buyer didn't lose a case here, they did pay you, and you lost.

Ebay: "Gotcha sucka!" Now if you continue to fight the case ebay will probably rule in the buyer's favor and give you a blemish on your account for "fighting."

@ise710  is the one with the correct answers here.  A lot of incorrect answers.

The seller CAN deny a return request IF they have No Returns.  It's one of the only benefits of doing so.   Typically the buyer cannot then open another case!  In fact, I've never seen it & I've denied plenty of returns.   I think Ise710 is right that this particularly savvy buyer, then called Ebay to complain & got them to refund him on their dime.   That's a pretty smart or especially angry buyer, as it's very unusual to have them do that when you deny a return request.

OP, your buyer was just particularly knowledgeable.   In 99% of the cases, you'd deny the return request & that would be the end of it.   UNLESS, it was a SNAD case & if it was, you would NOT have had the option to deny it.   Ebay would have forced you to refund them.   If you were able to deny it, it was simply a remorse return request & you had every right to deny it & that IS usually the end of it.

I didn't read the updates when I replied earlier. From context I'm guessing ebay paid out both parties?

Anyhoo, I want to also point out that the ability to decline a return can also be from a SNAD or remorse if the return was filed after the 30 day money back guarantee window. You can decline those and ebay can't step in. I still don't understand why ebay allows a buyer to even file this after 30 days, especially if the seller has 30 day returns set.

The Op states this, the purchaser stated  " I need to return this item as it does not fit my model of car. "

Hence a supposed remorse case if the listing did not say it did fit the car: such could be denied as a return.

Such was done.

At this time it was a return request, which was denied.

Then the user opens a snad or item not as described case and got there money back.

Read of other times this has been done.

Oh the next option for a buyer would have been a payment dispute, so the still had options to get the money back.

eBay has made it to were the buyer win in most cases...

Depends. Buyer could have opened a case for doesn't fit which is remorse case and then opened a INAD.

If so you shot yourself in the foot by not making the buyer pay shipping two ways instead of you.

Yes. Zero feedback buyer who in his return request wanted a return label. I don't think the average newbie user would know about that.

My understanding is that they can't open a SNAD AFTER opening a Remorse returns case.   The double dip is one of the few things that's not allowed.   They had to have called Ebay or contacted them on SM or something like that.

I disagree. All one has to do is google. “How to return something on EBay” and the rest is history.

How is it buyers remorse when an item doesn’t fit? Buyer’s remorse is regretting a purchase after it has been made.

Part was stated as coming off a 2013 model. He said it didn't fit his 2012 model. It's the buyers responsibility to make sure it fits his car. Regardless, he was lying as 2011-2014 all take the same part. I suspect he didn't like the condition or thought I would automatically refund and let him keep it.
