Ebay message from someone claiming to be from Wells Fargo wanting to discuss different platforms.

Hi Edward,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Craig Smyth and I’m on the internet research team at Wells Fargo. I am currently researching trading card marketplaces to learn more about the competitive differentiation between the eCommerce platforms.

As such, I’d love to have a brief chat to learn more about your experience on eBay. The call would be no more than 15 minutes and would primarily focus on competitive differentiation and industry trends.

Please let me know if you have any availability to accommodate a call in the next week.

Anyone know if this is legit?

I would instantly report that.

Maybe they have services for you and they accept payments in gift cards.

Or maybe for your participating in the phone call they have a gift card for you.

Just provide all your personal information so they can send it to you.

If it didn't come to you via the Ebay Messages on the Ebay site, it's spam. Ebay users ONLY communicate with us THROUGH Ebay, not via e-mail (although I get an e-mail as well when I get an Ebay Message notification)

Is your name Edward?  If it is in your eBay message box, you can use the dropdown under the "action" tab to report it.

And for the version that turns up on your personal email  "spoof@ebay.com"

Reason I say report and not just delete and ignore is because sadly many people fall for this type of stuff and your report might stop someone else from becoming victim. 👍

I would be very leery of anyone contacting you through this platform.  Clearly, Mr. Smyth would want your direct phone number which is technically a policy violation.  Let them do their own research elsewhere and explain why on earth Wells Fargo Bank would associate their bank with trading card sales.  Whatever it is, he is attempting to make himself sound legitimate by claiming an association with Wells Fargo. Scam in the works!

Ask "Craig" what's in it for you, or tell "Craig" to get lost.
