Ebay customer service does not solve problems

- Listed my vehicle for sale

- item sold to the highest bidder

- buyer did not respond to any of my contact attempts and did not pay

- I attempted to cancel the transaction

- buyer did not respond to cancel request

- I closed the whole transaction, on the suggestion of an ebay customer service rep

- Because the item initially "sold", I was charged the $125 selling fee

- When the transaction was cancelled and closed, I was "credited" $125 in my ebay account.

I have called ebay customer service 4 separate times over the last week trying to figure out how to get the refund back into my bank account. 3 out of the 4 ebay representatives told me to not worry, and just wait another day for the system to catch up and refund me this money. Still nothing. I called ebay today, and now I am told that I need to wait until the end of December? Meanwhile, $125 of my money is just sitting out in the void, and I'm scrambling to make rent. Ebay customer service SUCKS and they don't help me, but instead just read the same information repeatedly, which is the same information I'm able to access on my own computer. I just want my money back! I did not sell the item, so I should have the $125 refunded to my account! Why am I continuously told to wait, and then find that the money is still not transferred? Am I just being delayed again and again so that ebay never has to pay me my money? This is ridiculous. I'm a broke recent graduate, and I have enough financial troubles as it is. Now ebay is basically just stealing $ from me and refusing to pay. Wish I had a lawyer.

You were charged a $125.00 insertion fee, just like putting an ad in the newspaper.

Sold or not, that is the amount you pay to list a vehicle on ebay, non refundable.

This page might help.

Yeah but the difference between an ad in the newspaper and ebay is... the newspaper doesn't take down the ad as soon as a potential buyer says I'll take it.

Solution. Leave auction up for number of days paid for. Put 'sale pending.' If it falls through the next offer in line will be the winner.  Done in real estate all the time.

There was a class action about this very thing some time back.

Yeah, but that's the issue! I kept being told that I'd get refunded in cash, and now I'm getting a useless account credit ?

@mirandawiley00 Is the money in your paypal account?  If so, I don't see the problem here: Log into paypal and transfer the money into your bank. Then it would be just like getting the refund in cash.

Happy 2018! May this upcoming year be a prosperous one!

The meaning of account credit is ambiguous here.

Account credit can be the return of funds but it can also be a credit to your account that will be used for future listing fees.

I believe I have read that in the case of fees, Ebay does not refund cash but refunds in the form of a credit towards future seller fees.

I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time!

doug@ebay

Please, can you help the OP?  Which is the proper definition of account credit, actual cash or credit toward future fees?  Thank you!

The buyer won the auction, you can't put sale pending on ebay, it sold, she never got paid.

real estate is a different matter, where sale pending is good.

In ebay's eyes she had a successfull listing, it "sold"

@sockmonkeydave Nope. Listing is free. The $125 is a successful listing fee on a listing that ends with a bid or BIN.

@mirandawiley00 OP, the fvf credit is an account credit, not a cash credit.

Correction...successful sales fee. Not listing fee.

Correct on both, epon. Only because ebay gives every low-volume vehicle seller 6 free listings every year.

Most likely they do this because they know that 90% of them won't be actually paid for or sold for real.

There have been some misunderstandings and misinformation posted here, so to clarify some things:

  • $125 is the successful listing fee (for a low volume seller, vehicle price > $2,000). It's not an insertion fee (which would have been free for that listing).

  • The successful listing fee can be refunded under some circumstances if the sale doesn't go through. Because vehicle sales aren't  paid for through eBay/PayPal, they won't be refunded "automatically" like going through the Unpaid Item process. The seller has to contact eBay customer service, and they will review the messages and communication. Many sellers have been able to get refunds easily when the buyer backed out for some reason. There just needs to be some evidence that the sale was not completed.

  • The policy page for eBay Motors Fees used to say that the successful listing fee was not refundable, but it doesn't say that anymore. Even when it did, that was because there was no automated process to get the refund, like the UPI process. Many sellers got the fee refunded back then too, when the sale didn't go through for some reason.

@mirandawiley00,

to answer your question about getting a refund of the credit on your account, here are the instructions to Request a refund of your eBay credit balance.

It does say "Please allow 30 days for refunds to be processed. When eBay issues a refund, it is applied to the payment method where it originated." but that isn't set in stone, it doesn't always take 30 days. Most of the time, especially when the payment was made through PayPal, refunds are processed much more quickly than that.

eBay Staff have explained that most of the time, refunds are processed within a few days. But in some circumstances, usually when a PayPal account was not used for the payment and depending on the credit card / debit card account processor that is involved, it may take up to 30 days for the credit card to show the credit the payment to your account. But that's unusual.

In my experience, refunds show up on my credit card account (online) within a day or two.

Ah. See that now. Thought it was a BIN since you compared it to a newspaper ad. That's always a BIN.

For a GTC BIN or any remaining time left on a BIN I could see a sale pending for motor vehicles. Good for the seller, good for potential buyers, good for ebay if they get FVF but don't know that much about the fee structure for that category. Would never auction a car here for all of the obvious reasons.

I'd kinda like to know how that goes now, with all of their suspensions being handed out right and left for ebay 'assuming' an off-site sale just from innocent emails.

Well it did at 7:00 this morning.

Other terms

  • Insertion fees and advanced listing upgrade fees apply to each listing you create, are charged at the time of listing, and are nonrefundable.

Yes, "Insertion fees and advanced listing upgrade fees apply to each listing you create, are charged at the time of listing, and are nonrefundable."

But, the fee in question was a Successful Listing Fee, and that is NOT listed as being nonrefundable.
