EBay commission

Can anyone kindly explain this to me:

Three days ago, I sold a South Sydney Rabbitoh's cooler-bag to a guy in Chile, being a huge Russell Crowe Fan. The Sales price was $24 and I had charged him $22.80 for postage - Total $44.80.   Ebay sent me an insane "payout" of just $16.91 - meaning that they took a 65.3% commission of $28.71 (There were NO "held funds")  Seeing as the subsequent postage was $33.00 of which I now had only $16.91 (yes...that was my fault)

I lost that bag for the privilege of paying $16.09.

They "payout details" showed only this:

A payout is a net of all your included activity the cutoff date/time for the payout.

Was this the only entry in your payout detail for that payout?

I'm not going to invest too much of the mathematic part of my brain since you couldn't add 24+22.8 together. But eBay takes their cut on the total with postage and there is probably an international fee for 1.65% in there.

Sometimes I still have payments processing or have shipping labels purchased for shipping that have not processed which skews to "payout" amount.

ETA:  the $33 postage may be a clue .........................

Was that the only item you sold? eBay deducts all their outstanding balances out of payouts. It is possible that you had other postage, Fees or commissions from other items that was taken out, but as others said your postage of $33 is a big part of it and without seeing your payout itemization it's a guess for everyone on here to answer correctly.

Sadley hard to blame a buyer for a seller's mistake and it certainly wasn't eBays fault. You never learn from doing everything correctly Lessons are learned and REMEBERED from Mistakes. All you can do is Hope he enjoys it as much as You did and be happy that you live in GODS Country

EBAY charges selling fees on (purchase price + shipping + sales tax) plus 30 cent handling charge.    EBAY holds back "shipping money" so you have available funds to print your label.   Shipping money never goes to you.  You only get $24 purchase price minus EBAY selling fees.

To find out exact breakdown...go to Orders, All Orders (click on VIEW ORDER DETAILS).   This explains where every penny went.

     I took a look at the listing from a Chilean buyers perspective as shown below. As others explained you can find the details in the order by viewing order details. But with the information available a bit of a breakdown.

The FVF's would have been

($46.80 ( 13.25% + 1.65%)) + $.30 = $7.27 or 15.5%

     The error on the shipping where you only received $22.80 but paid $33 for the label was a huge one and represents the high selling cost percentage. 

$33/$46.80 = 70.5%

Your total selling costs were around 86% 

Your payout should have been (($46.80 - ($33 + $7.27)) = $6.53

 Of course this would have been less if you promoted the item. 

     It is unfortunate that you either do not use or are not eligible for the EIS program. Had this gone through EIS there would have been no international fee so your FVF's would have been less and you would have only been responsible for the domestic leg of shipping the item to the EIS hub. The EIS program would have invoiced the buyer for the item and collected the total amount of the sale as well as the cost of the shipping label for the international leg.

Yeah....the $44.68 was a typo....sorry to have insulted your intelligence (and time) but nothing in your answer accounts for a commission over 60% - which was my question. I'm well aware of HOW eBay accrues it's commission and the international fee (1.16% of $46.68) would be peanuts......so WHY/HOW did they end up with $29.89 commission?

It was just a regular one-off sale. Those pay-outs before and afterwards were all paid normally and were correct.  Nothing in any other sale has relevance.  The $33 purchase had nothing to do with it - EBAY didn't even know about that! the amount I charged the client was  $22.80 - so Ebay would just have taken their crooked percentage of that.....nothing accounts for their ripping off $28.71 from a $46.80 sale. The International fee is not even $2.00

Are you telling me Ebay keeps ALL the shipping cost - whatever it is  -  AND charges you commission on it as well?  What are you supposed to pay the shipping costs WITH then?

OK, I just looked at the next sale:

A Matchbox car,

sold for $110 + postage of $18. 50  Total $128.50

You say they keep the $18.50 shipping cost

So, their (approx) 13 % fee on $128.50 (not even including sales tax) is $16.70

plus 11% on promoting the item (11% of $110)                                                        12.10

                                                                                                                              equals $28.80

Take that away from the $110 - leaves  $87.20

Their payout was                                        $108.07 pretty much inline with all my payouts EXCEPT FOR the Cooler

bag to CHILE  and as I mentioned above - the split up of payments do NOT show HOW the $16. 91 payout is arrived at. All other payouts DO!

You would really need to look in your payout details to see what was included, and notice what wasn’t. But, bottom line is that you made about seven dollars from this sale.

No, the eBay commission is not 60% or over.  in the example that you gave, the eBay commission is roughly 12%. It’s just math.

No -- when the buyer pays for the item, he pays the item price plus  shipping fee plus possibly state sales tax.

You, the seller, use the funds the buyer paid for the shipping fee to pay for shipping.

3 days ago you sold a cooler, then you made 2 other sales after that.

The shipping you spent for the other 2 sales came out of your available funds BEFORE you received your payout.

Look at your Order Details and the Payment Details and it will tell you how eBay distributed the money.

Go to All Orders

Click on the Order Details in the far right bottom of the page you will get this information

To the right of View Order Details click on the drop down menu and you will get a page similar to this one.  Now find View Payment Details and click on it or from the previous page you can click on See more Details.

Once you open the View Payment Details page you should get a page similar to this that also explains where eBay sent the funds.

You can see a further breakdown if you click on the View buttons to the far right.  You should get pages similar to these by clicking on the View buttons.  

All the information about what happened with the funds and why is in the eBay Reports.  You just need to know where to look.
