Hi - I am trying to make a "P and L" for my ebay business and one thing I cannot confirm is where returns are factored in on the sales dashboard
For examples, on the sales dashboard there is a number called Total sales which is "
Includes item price, shipping and handling paid by buyers to you, and taxes and government fees such as recycling fees collected by you or eBay. Returns and canceled transactions are reflected.
Sales are counted only when the buyer makes the payment rather than when they commit to buy the item."
So this looks like top line sales (e.g. what you sell the item + shipping + taxes) but somehow also net of returns?
Then there is Net sales which is defined as "Net sales is Total sales - Taxes and government fees - Selling costs." which looks like it's Total Sales minus taxes and selling costs.
So are both numbers net of returns? And Net sales just takes it a step further by deducting taxes + selling fees?
Thanks in advance!

You CANNOT use the figure of 'Total Sales' shown on ebay for ANYTHING. It includes things that you will NOT see on a 1099 (or would be responsible to 'report' whether you get one or not)(Sales Tax Collected is NOT on 1099, but IS shown on that 'Total Sales'...also and does NOT include any refunds or cancellations.
Go to Payments; click the box where is says 'all transactions' and click OFF everything except 'Orders' and 'Refunds' and run that report, for each month (1st to 31st). Then, in the same area (click 'Tax Report') and click That for all FEES paid (it is a Monthly Report on it's own).

EBAY has a new "easy to read" 1-page report (shows gross sales, returns, EBAY fees, shipping expenses). Go to PAYMENTS, REPORTS (click NEW REPORTS on left hand side). Enter time period 1-1 to 12-31-2022.
Use the "gross sales" shown on report and deduct "returns & expenses" shown on report.

Thank you folks. Super helpful so far. On another note, is there a 3rd party tool that is adept at crunching ebay account numbers to give a detailed P and L statement? Similar to inventorylabs?

I'm responding to this for someone else who finds this post with a google search.
Yes, the "Net Sales" on the eBay performance page does include refunds (they are subtracted).
No, it's not an accurate profit and loss statement, but it's close, and represents your net sales within the last few days. It's good to use for your estimated tax payments.
If you want to double check, run a report and do the math.

If you are talking about just the eBay numbers then it is pretty simple to pull a detailed report, open it in EXCEL and total the numbers. If you are talking about an accounting package that incorporates the eBay bottom line numbers as one of the calculating factors then there are several available.
I am not a huge seller so I have found that simple EXCEL spreadsheets work fine to total the various selling expenses. For some things I just use a calculator.
