I had a buyer return late a new item they had used 2 1/2 months without filing a claim. I explained that I was on vacation and could not open my mail at the moment but would do so when I returned. That was not good enough for her. She opened up a claim 2 days ago so I sent her a reminder about being on vacation. Because it is Christmas time I decided to be nice and told her that I would return her money once I checked the item. I returned yesterday and the new cashmere scarf was totally used and had cat hair on it. Well this morning I got a notice from Ebay saying that she had proved her case and I had until today to return the money. Mind you that it has only been 2 days since filing her claim. It does no good to appeal as sellers who do that automatically get defects.
From now on I will never return money for items over 30 days. This buyer obviously knew that Ebay always sides with the buyer. SAD.

I thought Paypal has free returns now if you sign up for it?

Yep, you should have had the choice to decline the return.
Even if she had declined the return on Ebay, buyer can run to PayPal and get their money back. Then, just try getting your final value fee on that item back from Ebay. EVERYTHING is rigged in buyer's favor these days. I lost almost $100.00 on a sale that buyer went to PayPal on. They refunded purchase price plus $22.00 shipping and Ebay never refunded my FVF.
