Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

Buyers name is 'Hank Pym' from Marvels Antman, no feedback on account shipping address is a UPS store.

should I even dare ship this and risk losing my item to a scammer if he claims i sent him a empty box or something?

Zero feedback means almost nothing. However, Hank Pym being a marvel character or whatever certainly raises some questions as it's likely fake.

How long do you have before you have to ship? Some research could be done on the exact address - which I don't think you are allowed to post here but you can certainly google.

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

Yes they do, especially for the ship to name.

You do need to be incredibly careful with that GPU.

I can see that your winner is currently bidding on 10 other ACTIVE listings in the Graphics Card Category, that might concern me more than the use of a fake name.

How has the iPhone sale gone? The winner on that was also very active but mostly for headphones.

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

I decided to cancel sale for iPhone. user is from Ukraine, buyers name is in strange characters, claims to be using a forwarding company in new Jersey but warehouse shipping address in another state...

I haven't used eBay in a couple years. Seems like there is so much suspicious activity on here now.

I've been told it is against policy to use a fake name. So not to split hairs, I don't want to start another fight 😳. But I don't think it's 'allowed', rather, it happens. I had this happen recently, there was a discrepancy in the ship name vs account name.

I called cs, pointed it out and action was taken. That account was removed. I can post the redacted message I got from he scammer if you want, as well as the redacted eBay message.

I hope you can also get the negative feedback he left removed.  Your feedback score is now zero%.  Your account may also be in trouble unless CS removed the cancelled order strike you may get?  Did you use use problem with address?  If so you probably won't get a strike but you should check to be sure.

If it were me, I would never sell iPhones or GPUs overseas to Ukraine.  Probably only to the US.  But if they used a forwarding address in the US there is really no way to stop that except to cancel with problem with address after you see buyer is based in Ukraine for such high scam items. Wish there was an official way to block that case.  Hopefully it goes smooth from now on for you.

He didn't leave a neg. That was someone else, and those fake accounts generally get removed eventually just takes forever. So they generally remove the neg too since it's all determined to be a scam.

I don't have a zero though, so were you responding to the other guy?

If you sell through global shipping vs. these New Delaware jobs there is much better protection and you can sell to Ukraine. Maybe. Maybe. Still keep your guard up.

@espresso_warehouse

Yeah sorry meant to reply to OP to get neg removed if possible and warn them about high scam items as their only 2 items sold in last year. They ended with zero percent positive feedback, not you.  Did not mean to rain on your good feedback.

I've got a neg right now at the very top. Is what it is. Probably will go away. If not, oh well. Not sending the iPhone there 🙃

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

I hope you used Problem with Address as your reason.

That and Buyer Request are the only reasons for cancellation that eBay accepts without penalizing you.

A Defect can lead to higher fees, restrictions on the number and value of your listings, or if too many cancellations are handed out, the closing of the selling account.

buyers name is in strange characters

Do you mean in Cyrillic? That is the norm in Ukraine , Roman letters could lead to delivery delays.

using a forwarding company in new Jersey..shipping address in another state...

Certainly a concern, but eBay's own freight forwarder uses a shipper in Kentucky but sometimes an Ohio address has appeared. After consulting a map, the two addresses were seen to be about 15 minutes apart and both near the airport.

But definitely a Problem with Address situation.

I haven't used eBay in a couple years.

Auctions for mass produced products have pretty well died. Over 85% of transactions are now Fixed Price. I would suggest that you decide your price and list with Immediate Payment Required. Your listing will be visible for 30 days or until someone actually pays (not just purchases, pays).

New and returning sellers are targets for scammers, especially in electronica. Keep your guard up but don't panic.

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

For the "ship to" name at least they can use whatever they want-- I've shipped to business names & one that was very obviously a relative sending a gift to a young child ("For [Name]-love Boo Boo").

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

Looks like you have been on eBay for awhile at least with this account so you are a pretty viable target for the scammers. Both of your sold items are high value, high target items for the scammers and there are usually multiple postings on this forum ever week about being scammed out of a card or a phone. I would be as concerned about the card as I would be the phone, neither of which I would ever list on eBay.

Others have already mentioned about working to get the negative removed so I will not dive into that but I looked at your sold listings and noticed that you currently sell worldwide with a very limited exclusion list. While the foreign market is very lucrative it also introduces some additional risk.

While I sell worldwide I have a pretty extensive list of countries that I will not ship to, nor will I buy from. China, Russia and the rest of the FSU are at the top of that list. You may want to think about where you actually want to sell internationally and revise your list or limit it to US only. Even with just selling to the US it will not stop the foreign buyers that use US based freight forwarders from bidding on or purchasing an item.

Probably a good decision to cancel this order. On top of everything else even if you had shipped it the question would be whether it arrived in the Ukraine before Russia invades the country and it becomes a war zone.

One final note if you are gong to continue to sell cell phones make sure you have the IMEI number recorded somewhere just in case you do get scammed out of the item you can report the IMEI number as being lost or stolen and the phone basically becomes useless to whomever has it. Personally I would look for other venues to sell the phone and card on where there is less risk.

Re: Does ebay allow fake names for buyers?

Could be using a stolen credit card to make the purchase and doesn't want to use his/her real name.  That's why I block bidders who use PO Boxes.
