Dilemma , either way, Iose.

I sold as baseball cap, pre owned in very good condition for $39, it looked unused. I just got this message from the buyer..."Thank you I just received the hat and it’s great. It has an issue. The Velcro back has come apart see picture. Please let me know how to proceed" . He sent me one tiny photo of the back strap that is falling apart. The hat had no issues and you can even see in my photos that there was no damage. I have a close up of the strap.  I asked for more photos with the surrounding area. I thought I might offer him a partial refund because that seems like what he is insinuating. If I just ask him to return for a full refund, I'm going to get back a damaged hat. Seems like I lose either way.

Ask him/her to back up and take another picture, and also try to get a close up that’s not blurry.

 

That doesn’t look like a dog chewed it - that’s how fabric tears or rots along the pressure of the sewing line, whether with age or from use/sweat.

You see that kind of damage on armhole edges, pants hems, the edges of button packets, etc.

 

Whether that’s your hat, you need better pictures in general and clearer pictures of the damage.

 

But that picture is consistent with fabric rot.

Tagging - OP it's quite possibly rot that you didn't notice - it happens to all of us - we think we have a great piece only to find after you wash it - the hem fell out, the dye bleed or you have rot. We just sometimes don't notice things because most of the time the items are in great condition. The buyer opened the Velcro and it came apart - just as vintage shoes after a couple of times of the buyer wearing them separate at the sole.

 

Only you can decide whether to accept the return of offer a partial. I do not believe the buyer is trying to scam you. I've offer partials in the past if the buyer really likes the item and it's a quick fix on a loose hem, small hole, some stitching I didn't notice that was loose - it was still a win win for both of us - they got to keep a product they liked - I didn't have to pay for return shipping or see a SNAD on my acct for a year.

 

Sometimes sellers don't want to believe that they too can make mistakes.

I do.

 

The buyer is lying, I can tell by the pics on the listing that the cap was not sent in the condition the buyer is claiming. The pic the buyer sent the op is either a different cap, or the cap has been damaged after delivery by the buyer's dog, or whatever...

I’d want a few better pics myself, but in general that’s exactly how fabric rot can present itself - little strips like that along sewing lines and fabric edges.

OMG, vintage rot!!!!!

 

Wore a gorgeous pair of lizard heels to a fancy Los Angeles business event of all things, only to have the skin literally shredding around my toes within the hour. I spent the better part of this prim and proper event in bathroom slippers I bought in the hotel gift shop. 

 

Here’s another: Wore a very Lucy circle skirt 50s dress to meet the remodelers for my utterly atomic 50s ranch house and discuss final drawings for the project. How apropos, right? Felt a tickle of breeze .... tiny bit of seam had popped. Luckily they had safety pins. Then another and another and another. By the time I left, I’d used the WHOLE PACK of safety pins and the only seams left on the dress were a bit of armhole. I was essentially NAKED without that pack of safety pins!!!!!

 

And let me reiterate - both pieces looked completely mint.

I don't see what I sell has anything to do with my post.

 

I can tell you I'm not an idiot though..

 

The op did not send the cap in that condition, I'm not sure that it's even the same cap..

 

The op is an experienced cap seller, and I know the op would have noticed that damage if it was there..

Yes the op had better be prepared that he is going to get a different cap,that tab is destroyed.The buyer wouldnt do that to the cap he purchased, cause he plans to keep it. Cant remember when I looked yesterday if it had free returns.

What you might sell matters because then you’ve had experience with rot.

 

 I really enjoy you, so I want this to stay friendly, but 1.) read my post above about my own wearing experience and 2.) yes, rot can give in tiny strips like that along edges and stitching.

 

Given that, the picture is a blob of fuzz and I’d want better pics from the buyer.

I don't need to be a seller of vintage items to know rot when I see it, and the damage on the cap doesn't look like rot, it looks like wear and tear, or damage. I'm leaning more to wear and tear though, which means it's not the same cap.

Don't know where this vintage words came into play, maybe assumption that the hat was vintage?  Let's get back on track with the OP's topic.
