Delayed Payment

What happens if someone wins an auction today and then tells you they will pay in December?

What will eBay do if payment has not been made?

I do not mind waiting but I do worry eBay will flood them with advertisements of like items and they may change their mind about the auction they won.

Delayed Payment

I do not mind waiting

Then make sure your preferences "for items awaiting payments" are NOT set for eBay to auto cancel in four days.  I believe you can set it up for 30 days or turn it off altogether and use it manually.  Do not, however, let the time limits expire so that you can cancel the order for non-payment if the payment is not made.

Though your generosity for "waiting" is admirable, the buyer could simply pay you with a credit card and pay that off next month.  You are NOT running a layaway service.

Delayed Payment

If buyers want to delay making the payment they ask you before they bid if you will agree.  I would not want to sell to a buyer who wants to negotiate eBay payment terms after they won and assume I will be alright with that. They really have no business bidding on something they can't pay for at the end of the auction.

Were it my buyer I would tell them sorry, you have 4 days to pay or I'm cancelling the transaction.

That answer doesn't accurately portray all the options available to the OP. The implication is that the transaction will be cancelled after four days. While that is one option, it is not the only one.

Please see message #3 for the correct answer.

As has been illustrated, there is a lot of misinformation about the unpaid item cancellation process being posted on the discussion boards. Your best bet is to read it yourself to get the most reliable advice. The process to which message #3 is referring can be found here:

Resolving unpaid items with buyers

And your preferences can be set here:

Preferences for items awaiting payment -- make sure you switch the toggle next to "Automatically cancel unpaid items"

If this seller wants to change their settings to allow up to 30 days or whatever, would it apply to this auction that is already closed, or only items yet to close in the future?

If they can't pay now just cancel and relist the item on day 5 when eaby allows you to.

Most likely they ain't paying and want your item off the table so they can sell theirs.

eBay bidders are notoriously known to not pay after winning an auction. Hence, if they do not pay within that time frame, a case can be opened against them which will void the order and refund you applicable fees + no ding on your account.

In the circumstance described by @ittybitnot, it would be both. The feature can be adjusted at will by the seller.

December is 3 weeks away.  Don't let these people take advantage of you just because you are new to ebay.  They live for it. Chances are they probably won't pay you.  There is a 4 day grace period for payment.  If they don't pay, ebay will take care of the rest and they will get a strike on their account.  As one of the other knowledgable sellers posted here, you are not running lay-away plan...even lay away has to have some money down to hold an item.  It's the holiday season and you have listings to post and money to make. Don't put your hopes up on a may or may not payment.  Good luck.  PS I would suggest fixed payments in the future, so that you don't run into this situation again.

I've had a few offers like this, to hold an item-but they didnt win the item yet. I politely decline and let them know if its still available when they are able to purchase I would be more than happy to sell it to them.

Why are they on ebay buying when they don't have the money?

A few days...no problem. 3 weeks....see ya!

The majority opinion of the responses is to let it run its 4 day course, then relist AFTER BBLing the buyer.

A few of us have been here a few rounds.....but as always, its your choice to wait.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Unless you stop it (depending on how you have your settings), buyer will automatically get a strike on Day 4 and the item will go into your unsold folder.

Honestly, though. I’m one of the most laid back sellers on this board and I wouldn’t wait that long for payment.

Once upon a time, but it isn’t 2001 anymore
