Customer has not initiated return - how long do I wait?

Hi, there...! 

 

I sold an electric shaver to the highest bidder. The client reported the unit didn't work very well, so I offered him a refund. He was suprised and pleased that I just offered him his money back, and he promptly sent the item back. I opened the item and discovered he hadn't cleaned it, his hair was all over the heads and within it, pretty nasty. I blew the hair away with compressed air, then cleaned it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. I then used it on myself and it worked just fine. That's actually good news, because it means I can resell it.

 

I asked the client to initiate a refund about 8 days ago.  No response. How long do I need to wait? And should I ask for some money off for handling, i.e. having to clean someone's gross hair out the unit?

Rather than stress or overthink this, just refund $ and move on.  Refund only through eBay though...

PS the shaver was 100% new, I got it as a gift and didn't want it.

Did the buyer start a Not as Described case in eBay before just sending it back?

 

If not you can just go to the item on your sale page and use the drop down to refund.

 

I would never resell a used shaver. 

But then again I would never buy a used personal grooming item either.

I'd refund. Doing it outside of return is only beneficial for your return metrics.

Hi @jmaxoutfit 

 

There is no need to wait any longer.  You can simply refund the buyer now.  I would NOT withhold money, since it is against policy to charge a 'restocking fee'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears you offered to give his money back without going through procedure of having him request a return label. Buyer had your address from the shipping label so it appears he may have paid for his own label to return it to you. You did get it back. You knew he used it and was unhappy with it so not a big surprise he didn't clean it. I would keep my word and click refund  and refund fully. As for the feedback its positive and his so I'm doubtful it can be removed. Ebay probably  gets few requests to remove positive feedback. I say block, move on and relist as used.

If you are a TRS I would give him 50% for the amount he paid since he didn't return the shaver in the same condition as it was sent.

Do yourself a favor and go to your sold page hit the dropdown menu and refund the buyer.  No negative feedback no NAD claim and you can resell the item to get your money back. Sounds like a good deal to me. Good Luck

Which would turn into a potential case and negative feedback for a reason that you can't give partial for.

 

If it was simply buyer remorse, then I would agree with you.

Refund the 50% like the other person stated. If you are not comfortable with that, then withhold the initial shipping fee and add a few dollars for cleaning and sanitizing the shaver.   Make sure that you block the buyer.

To address ^^^ this... no, that would be considered a restocking fee and those were disallowed a long time ago.
