Creation of a Separate Handling Fee by State

Sellers  have different ebay final value fees based on the buyer location because state taxes are included in the calculation.  In order to remedy this extra cost, Ebay should allow the seller to be able to charge different handling fees by state.  Additional I know my shipping costs are different as well by location.  I am on the west coast and it costs more to ship to the east coast using ground advantage for example, so I could build that into the handling costs as well.  Thoughts?

Ohhh @lesey06  You are charging buyers flat rate shipping!?!? That's your problem!! You want to be fair to a NV buyer vs a NY buyer?? Then don't charge them the exact same shipping rates .... NY costs more, use calculated shipping and they'll pay more. NV costs less, use calculated shipping and they'll pay less. Problem solved for shipping. You're left with sales tax and the differences between sales tax across the country is fairly negligible, use the working average as has been suggested and you'll do just fine.

Your own business practice choice of charging flat rate shipping instead of calculated is what's hurting you most...

Oh my, I should have looked.  That's what I get for assuming.  Based on your concern for fairness I assumed you were offering calculated shipping so you weren't over/under charging.

@lesey06 ,

I have come to the conclusion long ago that not everything is fair in this world. Why should I have to subsidize the able bodied person that sits at home watching Oprah and eating peppermint bon bons all day?  While in addition to my daytime job I spend 20 hours per week selling on ebay.

All I can think of is the dog's breakfast eBay's shaky IT team would make out of developing and implementing a state/municipal-based fee variance matrix and then applying it to the selling form. I think calculated shipping is a better way to go, yeah.

So if I read this correctly, you seek to be given authority to enact a tax upon the buyer to offset a tax placed upon you by ebay for following taxes enacted by other authorities? Short answer: No.

As a seller of merchandise, you have to factor your direct costs into the sales price of your merchandise. Taxes are known, but variable. You can't directly counter them individually. You have to build it in, as others have suggested, to your overall merchandise as a cost of doing business.

I am on east coast & suffer the same in reverse to west coast for costs. You are lucky you have not enacted something on your own as there are some laws you could get into issue with by trying to conditionalize parts of interstate commerce within the US. Far easier to just adjust pricing up to average it out & deal with it like all other businesses already do.
