Concerned about buyer

I'm new to selling on ebay so I may be paranoid but something doesn't feel right about this buyer.

I sold an item to this buyer on 8/3 for the buy it now price of $379. I look at their account and it was made that day and had under 100 page views and no other buying history.

At this point im slightly concerned and send an email to the buyer thanking them for the purchase and that I'll be sending the package with signature confirmation and ask if they'll be available to sign for the package. I haven't received a reply to that.

I then Google the name and address of the buyer. The address pulled up and 2016 county records list it as vacant. The name returns no social media hits, and the address and name have no history of association.

At this point I sent another email asking again if they're aware they will need to sign for the package and still haven't gotten a response back.

I understand this is definitive evidence but it smells fishy. Their payment still hasn't cleared and im hoping it doesn't so I can file an UID and close this out.

Am I being paranoid ? Any advice would be appreciated for this situation.

Thanks guys.

I look at their account and it was made that day and had under 100 page views and no other buying history.

I think you are assuming they have no other buying history because they have no feedback.  One has nothing to do with the other.  FB is a voluntary thing, so someone can have lots of transactions that you can't see when reviewing someone's account.  In fact there is no way for you to know if this buyer has bid on other things or if they have purchased anything else.

However, since it was a newly created account, chances are pretty good you are their first purchase.

At this point im slightly concerned and send an email to the buyer thanking them for the purchase and that I'll be sending the package with signature confirmation and ask if they'll be available to sign for the package. I haven't received a reply to that.

It is important to keep in mind that buyers are not necessarily at their computer or reviewing their emails as often as sellers might.  It has only been one day, don't jump to conclusions.

I then Google the name and address of the buyer. The address pulled up and 2016 county records list it as vacant.

You are paranoid!  All that means is that last year it was vacant at the point in time Google checked the records.  That doesn't mean it is vacant now.

The name returns no social media hits, and the address and name have no history of association.

Not everyone does social media or have an active presence on the internet.  There are all kinds of people that use Ebay and it seems you want to fit them all into the same type of behavior and that isn't going to happen here.  We have a diverse group of sellers and a diverse group of buyers.  We are NOT all alike.

At this point I sent another email asking again if they're aware they will need to sign for the package and still haven't gotten a response back.

Slow down.  You are risking ticking your buyer off by being a pest.  How many emails is this now?  2, 3 +.

I understand this is definitive evidence but it smells fishy.

It only smells fishy to you because you are assuming too much.  You have no FACTS.

Their payment still hasn't cleared and im hoping it doesn't so I can file an UID and close this out.

OMG,  you feel like this and it has barely been 24 hours since the purchase.  You don't say anything in your listing regarding payment terms.  So exactly how do you expect your customer to know that you expect payment in under 24 hours?  Leaving it to the imagination of your buyer isn't always a good thing.  Especially if you are an impatient person.  But if you start putting your payment terms in your listings, be sure you can enforce them.  Which a less than 24 hour payment term you can not.  The soonest you can open a UID is 48 hours after purchase.

Since you are saying their payment "hasn't cleared", are you saying you have received payment, but in the form of an echeck?  So you have the payment, but it hasn't cleared yet?  I'm not sure I understand.  If you have payment, but you are waiting for it to clear, why are you so concerned?

Am I being paranoid ?

YEP!

Any advice would be appreciated for this situation.

Patience!!!  You've sent reminders to your buyer, now leave them alone and see what happens.  When selling in the electronics category it is always a good idea to stay on your toes as there are buyers out there that will scam you a bit more than in other categories.  But you have NO evidence that this is going on with your transaction.  If you just can't stand it any longer, then after 48 hours from purchase, open the UID.  Write down the date and time you open the UID.  If payment does not arrive then you can close it 96 hours after you open it.  So if you open it at 10:00PM today, you can close it at 10:01PM on Tuesday.

Only ship to the address shown on the PayPal transaction Details page, but not until it says okay to ship across the top.

Not to hijack this thread --- My question is not about whether buyer has made payment or not, it's about your reply.

If a seller clicks on send Invoice to Buyer on their eBay Sold item page - the name and address and phone number of the buyer comes right up.  Isn't that address shown there for the buyer enough that when the buyer pays from the Invoice, and that same address shows up on the eBay shipping label - the seller will be covered?

YES, but there is a catch.  You would be covered in Ebay.  But if that address is different than the one that appears on the PP payment, you would NOT be covered under PP's seller protection if you shipped to it.

Ebay's policy is you ship to either the address in Ebay or the address on the PP payment.  But the PP policy is not so generous.  To be covered under PP's seller protection you MUST ship to the address on the PP payment notification.

You have two small sales in the last year and have received a Negative as a seller, leaving you with a 67% feedback percentage as a seller. Wonder if your buyer is on a forum, as we speak, wondering if you are legit.

@bubbleman2010 thanks for the info.

@mam98031,  thanks for that info!  I must admit I rarely log into my PP except when I go to pay for an item and then that's not really logging in.   It's been this way with me for MANY years.  Thank goodness I have never had a problem.  Why would someone have a different address on their eBay than on their PP??

So, each time these really big sellers who get hundreds of sales per day, get paid, they actually log in to their PP to verify the address each and every time - a hundred or more times per day?   <fainting>

You do not need Signature Confirmation for any transaction under $750 (including shipping). The standard tracking number showing delivery to the buyer's zip code is plenty.

So did the buyer pay? By e-check? By debit card? By credit card? By Paypal funds? Remember that an e-check generally takes a few days to clear both banks. Be sure to look at the Paypal transaction details screen to see all the information. Or did not buyer not pay?

Where are you seeing that information on the OP? When I viewed the FB score, it was showing 100% Positive for the past 12 months. That negative is in the "Over 1 Year" category.

Their eBay address is whatever they provided to eBay when they set up their account. That doesn't matter, actually; the important address is the one you receive from PayPal with their payment. That's where they want their package to go, and that's the address to which you ship in order to maintain your seller protection. It may or may not match their eBay address; most of the time it does, but it doesn't matter either way. The address you receive with the payment is where it needs to go.

So after you've received clear payment from the buyer and it's time to ship, you go to your eBay/PayPal shipping form, and the address that's showing there is the Ship-To: destination. That's all there is to it.

Um, no... I'm not sure how that idea came about. The Ship-To: address accompanies the payment automatically. You just print and ship.

P.S. Forget the Signature Confirmation. You do not need it for seller protection on sales below $750; Delivery Confirmation is sufficient. SC also adds a layer of complication for the buyer, as an adult needs to be home to sign for it at delivery time.

I have never, ever, ONCE used Ebay's buyer address to ship. I always log in to Paypal and get my info from there. It has never been a problem.

The Paypal address is the ONLY one that matters. If the buyer is sending a gift, that is the address to use, and if you use their Ebay info, you're sending to the wrong person and have opened yourself up for an INR.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

@a_c_green,  thanks ... the part above that I underlined --- that's how I have been doing it for years.  I click the print shipping label from my eBay Sold Page (has nothing to do with PP, that I'm aware of) -- and when the Print Label form comes up, I click print.   Whatever address is on that label I have always assumed is the correct address and that's why I never thought about checking my PP for any other address.

@southern*sweet*tea, wow.   I believe you but somehow this is not making sense to me.  In all the years I have been selling -- I think it's 7 or 8 years - I have only EVER clicked on the Print Shipping Label from my SOLD listing on my eBay and shipped directly to that address on the label.   If the buyer is sending a gift and doesn't notify me? -- well, that would not be nice.    Hmmmm ... I have to think about this.  I guess it's good I'm not getting many sales lately.   lol

I have never looked at a PayPal address since I started excepting PayPAl when they started.
