There is a Starbucks Hawaii coffee mug that has been selling very well for me.
Apparently the mug is no longer being made/sold and is very hard to find.
I was checking out my comps today and found a seller who posted a picture of the price tag!
Why would anyone do that?

Although I admit I have occasionally scanned a book cover, uploaded it, then realized the thrift shop tag is still on it.

Perhaps as prrof that it had never been used, never been subjected to a dishwasher...?

And, you know, to a true book lover and collector, that is a good thing. That tag a part of the book's provenance, part of the record of its journey through time and its passage through the hands of this person or institution or that.

I must admit that as a seller of books, I am happy that my buyers actually know how to read.
And as a seller of sewing patterns that they know how to follow directions.
And as a seller of collectible stamps that they enjoy orderly pathways.
There are some categories that I just marvel at the courage of the sellers, like gaming. You have to know going in that your customers like playing games-- and winning.

Goo Gone works well for those.
Which reminds me - I have a mid-80s Starbarks thermal cup from their blueprint campaign - it has a really nifty mechanism for opening and closing the lid for drinking.

I sold some 60s new old stock hosiery, very classy nylon stockings with the original price sticker on the box. I owned them since 1966. Unopened box with those little round stickers they used to tape the box closed. Stored in a cedar chest. I wish I had of taken a picture of the original price tag but I didn't. Got a little note from the buyer saying they feel ripped off because they saw what I paid and I paid so little and they paid so much. They wanted me to refund the difference. I'm always sweet as pie to my buyers and will bend over backwards for them but this took the cake. I grumpily replied I'll tell you what, you can please return them for a refund and I'll give all of your money back!! I waited for the neg but miracle of miracles I didn't get one. They kept them.

Take some lighter fluid and squirt it on sticker and it peels right off. No damage to mug. Get a paper towel wipe off sticker glue.

I find this amazing, I have a lot of New Old Stock, I have items that were priced in the 1950's for 50 cents...... of course now they are obsolete. I've NEVER had anyone complain about a 60 year old price being on it.

Honestly, if it's something that's rare or out of production, I never bother to take the price tag off. The people who are looking to buy those kinds of things are usually well aware that they're OOP and that's why they're trying to find one; they don't care that they're paying more than the original retail price for it.
In fact, not that long ago I sold a couple of OOP Grumpy Cat Christmas plushies for twice their original retail price. They both have their retail price printed right there on their tags-- not a peep of complaint out of the buyer.

I had the same thing happen with an OLD OLD OLD gaming system. Still in the box, unopened, with the shrinkwrap intact. I "think" it may have been an original nintendo system, but really can't remember. Price was $180 printed on box and unremovable since it was still shrinkwrapped. Bidding war happened. Buyer paid over $600. THEN whined that they got ripped off because of the retail tag. Customer never did try to go through ebay, just kept messaging, eventually, I ignored them.
Another game system. Still in production, but not very popular (leapTV), made for preschoolers. Hot hot hot seller, with grandparents. I had about 180 of these, bought in Jan of the year at 90% off. All of them prepriced clearanced at $19.99 as in "used to be" $199.99. Huge price stickers. I sold them for $150, all of them, every single one of them, 5-20 a day in the month leading up to xmas.
Thought I'd taken all the price stickers off, but OPPS forgot ONE! Which caused me no amount of trouble. 3-4 weeks after xmas, the messages start from "this person". Who'd gotten offended that I'd left the tag on, with the price "I" paid for it, insisting on a refund of the difference. She WRAPPED the goshdarn thing, let her children unwrap it (with the tag still in place), let them play it for a month, THEN saw the same systems at some discount store for $99. Not even the same version. The ones I sold came with 3 games, while the clearanced discount store ones had no games.
I offered to let her return the system, but warned her the serial number had been recorded (and she paid return shipping). Heck it was even printed on the included invoice slip AND in the tracking notes on the sale (remember when we could do that?). And that number had to match the UNOPENED returned system, or no refund would be issued.
I ran the serial number for giggles (it was January, I was bored), she had registered the system with LeapFrog. She went away after I informed her that no return would be accepted since it wasn't in original condition (remember when we could do that too? SIGH).
So yeah, leave the tags on, lose, take the tags off, lose. Sometimes I miss the good old ebay (but this is what we have and we deal with it)

Honest to dog, some people are just idiots lol.
Some years back I worked with a guy who asked me once how much my bicycle (that I used to commute to work) cost. It was an excellent machine but I'd got it used and built it up myself, so it wasn't a lot of money. I said $250. He was an older guy and scoffed and looked disgusted. "For a BIKE? My bike when I was a kid was only $50!" I burst out laughing - I knew how old he was, and the dollar equivalent of $50 bike in 1950s money is about $500 now. I told him that and said "You were a kid riding more expensive equipment than I will ever have as an adult!" He just pouted.
Yet he could tie his shoes in the morning and was actually a pretty good employee even if he was a bit of a know it all.

Not a "bright" bulb that one. Are they shipping it from Sri Lanka? 😉

There is a lazier option. Because I sell in person some of the same stuff listed on eBay I take pictures with price tags on them.
I just go in the photo editor and blank the prices there. If it happens to sell on here I peel it off then or use a marker to obscure it.
If somebody complained to me about the 1960s price I would say "sorry, I had to pay for the time machine I used to go back to 1965 to buy it at that price"
